James Stewart - ... ( 2 months ago by jch35vt39h206)
James Stewart - ledgend of Shenandoah (a Civil war version)
The other one is about the English trader that falls in love with the Shenandoah Indian Chief's daughter.
This one honors the Shenandoah Valley and the sorrow felt by the explorers/pioneers as they left this area.
Hope this helps....you might just "google" for the lyrics fo the three versions.

I am a singer myself, but I can tell you that I've never heard such a rich deep voice, with perfect control and pitch, I'd give anything to sing like Ernie! As Pete 'Kiwi'Keegan I do 16 tons at my gigs, It always is everyones favorite song of the nite. I also tell the audience, "this song is a tribute to one of the best ballard singers of all time" Check out 'Born to lose' ( Released on Viynl with more lovely songs accompanied by only a guitar and double bass player)

So pretty. I love Tennessee Ernie Ford. I was born the year he released Sixteen Tons, one of the greatest songs of all time. Prophetic song too. In America we all live in the "company store". Corporations own our souls.

HOLY COW ! This is the standard by which all other versions must be judged - including Paul Robeson and the cross-over opera singers.
I have always been a Sixteen Tons fan. I didn't know he had such a mellow bass, with a "down home" quality, unlike some of those opera singers. What a big "buttery" bass Ernie has! This is a song made for him.

Ernie once did a song that I remember some but I cant find anywhere. He was a small boy sitting at the end of the Sunday dinner table with the big folks. At the other end was a delicious plate of hot biscuits. but the big folks were talking and wouldnt pass the plate down the table." Would someone pass the biscuits ? Oh, Sorry !" . When the big folks past the plate they all took one. He got the empty plate. Does anyone know where I can find this song ? Thanks, I think it was with George Goebul

The best version on YT of a great sad American folk song. It should be sung by a man because it tells of a man's dilemma. I invite you to read Tahllulah's explanation of what the words mean. Just read on Wikipedia that TE Ford spent some time studying voice at the U of Cincinnati. His voice was more than raw talent; he worked at it. I agree that his version to Hampson's or Robeson's. I also like Marilyn Horne's, one not (yet?)) on YT.
