Chapter 11-
I laid in bed all day trying to forget about everything else. All I was thinking about was what Dr. Hanson had said: my cancer was no longer in remission. That phrase played over in my mind until I was sick to my stomach. I had been crying all day, so I had a headache and my head was numb. I think I cried so much that I didn't think I could ever cry again. Every once in a while someone would try to get me to come downstairs, but no one had success: I wasn't bugging from my place under my covers. Just then, my phone started ringing and when I looked at the name that popped up on my phone I sat up quickly. Almost too quickly because I had to wait until I could see straight. The person that was calling had no idea of the condition I was in and that's how it was going to stay. I wasn't sure if I should answer it, but I did anyway. Maybe Nick was the one person that could cheer me up.
"Hello?"
"Hey Madison, what's up?"
"Oh, um...you know, same old." I quickly took a deep breath because I knew I would start crying again if I started to think about the doctor's diagnosis.
"Yah, same here. Listen, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to hang out today or something." I thought about that statement before I could answer him. Even though I had many doubts in my mind, I came to a decision rather quickly. Instead of being depressed about my condition: I should just enjoy life and live it normally, cancer shouldn't slow a person down.
"Sounds...sounds great Nick."
"Okay, I will pick you up around six tonight, is that ok with you?"
"Perfect." My heart fluttered as I thought of being close to Nick again. He really was a sweet guy, so I thought I might as well give him a chance. I started to hang up the phone when I heard him talk on the other end.
"Oh! And you don't have to dress up or anything cuz I'm taking you somewhere really awesome." I laughed at the excitement in his voice and then when we said goodbye, I wiped my face with my hands and then started to freak out. I needed my sister and Tor for this one again: I needed to look amazing.
*Later that day*
After Tori finished doing my hair all three of us stared into the mirror. I couldn't believe how a cute outfit, some makeup, and a simple hairstyle would make a person look ten times more put together. It was weird wearing skinny jeans and a cute t-shirt when most of the time I wore sweats and non-fashionable clothing items, but hey, if everything looked good on me I was more than happy to try something new. My hair was pulled back into a simple low ponytail that hung over my shoulder since my hair was so long and not to mention wavy. Tori did such a good job on my hair: it almost looked like a replica of something you would see on someone walking on the red carpet. Cassidy handed me a tube of lip gloss and a makeup bag. She told me to touch up any imperfections as the night went on, and I was glad she showed me how to do my makeup because before I didn't even really know what mascara was used for.
I could still see that the two of them were cautious when saying something to me. They didn't want to say the wrong thing to make my tears reappear and I loved them for caring about me so much. We all jumped when we heard the doorbell ring and then we all ran down the stairs trying not to knock each other over, worried that my dad would answer the door.
"You don't have to start a stampede. I'm not moving a muscle." I laughed as I opened the door. And when I did my breath was once again taken away. Nick was so beautiful it was almost unreal. It was like he had this mysterious power over me that put me in a trance to make me forget all my past worries: and that's why I needed him at this moment.
