Mastersinger's ... ( 3 months ago by mostcommonwombat)
Mastersinger's earlier comments re cuts in this piece include an inaccuracy. The once familiar cuts DON'T date back to it's premiere back in 1908 but rather to the 1930s when some conductors sought R's approval for cuts b4 performing. Cuts of various size were the fashion with this piece until Previn started reverting to the full score with the LSO in the early 70's.
Previn's love for Rachmaninoff's music and this piece especially is evident and he has this orchestra playing their heart out.

He succeeded Sir John Barbirolli as conductor to the Houston Symphony and one of the first things he did was to get his girlfriend Mia Farrow and go skinny-dipping in the Warwick Hotel's fountains. I heard they may have been on acid when they did it but somehow I doubt it.That was back in the mid 1960s. I thought he was too flashy to replace Sir John and I don't think he stayed long. I don't know who replaced him.I can't believe this is him. They years have NOT been kind.

Rachmaninoff was a genius! You ought to hear his "Vocalaise" and the rest of his symphonies!
I think Barry Manilow stole this melody as "Never gonna fall in love again!"
I guess Andre Previn FINALLY SETTLED DOWN and is now producing some of the finest music he has ever done. BRAVO! BRAVO!I didn't know he was capable of THIS INSPIRED PERFORMANCE but this orchestra is one of the BEST in the world!

agree that Rachmaninoff was probably one of the greatest melodists. Re Previn, Rachmaninoff has always been very central in his repetoire and, far from having FINALLY settled down, some of his best works dates back to the early 70's with the LSO notably the Rachmaninoff symphonies (esp this one) and the concertos with Ashkenazy. BTW, it was Eric Carmen who raided this movement for Never Gonna Fall In Love Again & slow mvt of Piano Concerto 2 for All By Myself.

Thanks. I am not quite up on popular music. But I think Barry Manilow sang it. That's where I first heaerd it was from him.
I can't believe how old Previn looks here! Wonder why he divorced the German violinist lady? He doesn't seem to do well in that department. When he first started, he seemed like a flyweight to me but now, He is doing some GREAT work;re: this video. Strange dude.

I loved Previn and Ashkenazy's Piano Concerto #3. I enjoyed their version of Piano Concerto #2 as well, but somebody else did my favorite version of that. But Previn/ Ashkenazy made me finally fall in love with #3. That was magic for me.

Certainly this has to be one the greatest pieces of music ever written. Pure genius. Full of warmth and ethereal, ineffable spiritual love. The hand of God guided Rachmaninov when he composed this.

Yes, Manilow's "If I Should Love Again" is based on this tune; if you hear a distant rumble right now it's Rachmaninov turning in his grave! Can't understand his divorce from Sophie Mutter - she well fit!

I've been a fan of Previn for years, I was a regular attendee of the Pittsburgh Symphony when he was running it. He is truly a master, though it's a shame to see that age is getting the better of him.

Something happened here! I am not so sure that it was music, at least on Previn's part. I think the orchestra was professional enough to ignore him. I was in Houston,TX when he took over there. He and Mia Farrow went skinny dipping in the Warwick Hotel fountains, supposedly after taking LSD.Maybe he is still having flashbacks. SAD!I never understood what the women saw in him. Or why he couldn't stay married. He looks so ANCIENT here!

Probably the only Symphony I can think of that matches the breadth, scope and emotional intensity of a Mahler Symphony.I love this Symphony. I have the Previn on Telarc from many years back. Also love Rachmaninoff's solo piano works.Especially the Variations.

I remember the first time I heard this movement. The opening bars made me sit down and listen! At 6.13 the new theme really started to grab me and when it resolved at 6.31 to 7.06 I could have quite happily sat and cried, it was the most beautiful piece of music I ever heard. Seeing the orchestra swaying from 6.31 onwards is just gorgeous. A beautiful performance of an absolutely awesome movement.

If you can find it, search for Dmitri Mitropoulos conducting the New York Philharmonic in a live concert from the early 1950s; their realization of this movement is seared into my soul forever, and it's as if they're composing it on the spot. They play with such passion and total commitment, as if their lives depended on it. We don't hear music making like that anymore. :-(
