this had me almost in tears. waht wonderful music, and from a film i watched as a child. it holds something very dear to my heart. i have however tried to watch the new version with that person from dawsons creek, but i just cannot bring myself to watch it. his voice irritates me and ruins the film in my opinion. i wish i could find the original film i saw with the original english dubs

Dissenting opinion: the first dub of LAPUTA is HIDEOUS. Despite the argument that Pazu and Sheeta's voices are less mature than Disney's, they still sound awful, both in terms of vocal quality and in acting. Disney's leads may sound too old, but both do better acting jobs by far. So I'm sorry but I believe that Disney's version is the better dub, and that this first dub is just junk. I understand people have issues with the new version, but it's no travesty at all.

Actually, I think that name [Louise Campbell] may be an alias. It was not uncommon for dub actors in the early '80s to use different names.
I also believe that just because there are fans who say that the older dub outclasses Disney doesn't mean that it's true; in fact I found it to be just the opposite. Leads aside, it was Muska's VA in the UK dub which really killed it for me--he sounded like a boring newscaster. How anyone can prefer that to Mark Hamill's superb performance is beyond me.

when you have had the kind of childhood that i have, and the only thing good in my entire childhood was watching this film, then yes it IS travesty to me. it just isnt the same, even some of the music has been changed ffs. i know it for certain even tho i have not watched the original since i was a child. but from what i remember, the acting in the original dubs were absolutly perfect, and suited the roles of the characters. that dawsons creek moron ruins the entire thing

It should be known that Miyazaki approved the changes in the new dub, and he doesn't think that it compromises his work at all. I wasn't talking about the Japanese version when I said that the first dub was awful; it was the Streamline one, which sounded so dull that it hurt my ears. Yes, Disney's version has changes, but they don't hurt the film in my opinion, and I don't think the guy who does Pazu in the dub does a bad job by any means. He's OK,just not as good as the other VAs in the dub

its not the fact that he does a bad job. i just literally cannot stand to hear his voice. his voice make's my skin crawl. and if i cant stand to hear his voice, that pretty much ruins the entire film for me. Miyazaki may have approved the changes, but i really dont care to be honest. personally i feel he made a mistake. but thats just my personal opinion. my preference, is the original american dubbed version that i remember watching as a child even tho i love original japanese. simple as that

I don't agree in the least that he made a mistake; and I don't think the new dub compromises the movie at all. I don't think it's a perfect dub, but it's certainly not unwatchable and I think its assets outweigh its weaknesses. Some may be free to feel otherwise, but I'll never believe that. This is my opinion.

In all fairness, the new dub may be disorienting to fans too familiar with the Japanese track, but it's NOT a bad dub in the least and I trust Miyazaki's judgment concerning the dubs more than I do others. Just because some folks dislike it doesn't make it bad, and likewise, just because some people say the first dub is superior doesn't mean that it is. Simply put, it goes both ways.

The revamp in question is the new score by Joe Hisaishi which he wrote for the Disney dub, which is actually not bad at all, although it probably DOES play better to people unfamiliar with the original Japanese. Anyway, in that rescore he extended his music for a symphony orchestra with breathtakingly gorgeous results. Although there are places where the extra music seems superfluous, for the most part it works very well. If there's any reason to see the dub, it's for the rescore.

well everyone has an opinion about it. mine is i cant stand james van der beek's voice. i wanna tear his jugular apart to make him stop lol. as for the rescore, well i remember it a certain way, and if its changed, and i dont like it, then thats it for me. ill stick to watching the original japanese version. have u never watched something that you loved, then years later it has been changed, and u havnt liked it? if not then im very suprised. not everyone like's a revamp

kind of like the americanized version of Godzilla. the affects were amazing, but the storyline itself was awful. or Hulk, that film i couldnt stand. but The Incredible Hulk was brilliant. Sometime's revamp's just dont work to well. other times they work amazingly well. its all about preference. sometime's change is good, other times change is not so good. Laputa for me has been changed, and i simply dont like the change. my own personal preference

Like I said, Miyazaki was fine with the new dub and it didn't offend me in the least. Just because some folks don't like it doesn't make it inferior, and there are far worse actors in the world. I'll always stand behind my view that the new dub of LAPUTA is a good dub; not perfect or purists' material by any means, but an interesting and equally enjoyable experience. And yes, this is from someone who liked it in Japanese.

In all fairness, it would've been difficult to cast either one of those two in English, because in many ways they are young and mature in others. While raising their ages by about ten years is a debatable decision in lots of fans' eyes, it really isn't that big a deal to me, and I don't care what naysayers think: I thought both did fine, and I did like the rest of the cast in the dub.

Also, while they might have probably raised their voices to make their attraction seem less uncomfortable to U.S. audiences, I don't really remember anything about a so-called love story being in either the original OR the Disney dub.
