Gran Jota was written by Tarrega in 1872. His teacher was the well known guitarist Julián Arcas Lacal who already wrote a Jota Aragonesa in early years. This one by Tarrega is a revived and rewritten Jota inspired in the one by his beloved teacher.
The piece contains a showy Lisztean introduction with new variations alternated with repetitive refrains. It incorporates virtually every element of a virtuosistic technique that a classical guitarist can make possible on the instrument.
In adition to that, originally it is a group dance piece that usually is performed as a virtuosistic finale with voice, most of the time male and female accompanied by bandurrias, guitars, dancers playing castanets and as well as the solo instrumental version, it involves is performed as a virtuosistic finale with voice, most of the time male and female accompanied tremendous demanding effort technically speaking.
To me, it's a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Excellent play. I like it.
So, who can we say is the original composer? Arcas or Tarrega? Interestingly this piece seems to be widely known to be composed by Tarrega with no/little reference to Arcas.
Julian Arcas ... ( 1 year ago by VirginiaLuque)
Julian Arcas composed a Jota that gave the inspiration to Francisco Tarrega to compose his own with all his variations. He based his themes on Julian Arcas melodies, we could say.

Thanks for your explanation. I did not know the original melody was from Arcas. You are the only one who described the Arcas' influence on this piece in youtube. Hope that whoever plays and listens to this piece would know its originally from Arcas' work.
Again, I enjoy your play very much. Hope more people recognize you as a world class player.

Usually, in the history of composition, some composers based their own pieces on themes that belonged to others, creating variations based on those themes or any other musical form. The themes of Jotas come from a very popular source from which melodies can permeate the mind of more than one composer.

Julian Arcas wrote a Jota.Tarrega studied with him, admiring the theme from the piece which comes from a very popular source of Spain,Tarrega composed an unique set of variations based on that theme,as any other composer has done in the history of music. He was a great composer and a great studious of the instrument.Yes,he was the actual composer.

Nice play Virginia and thx for giving a lot of info about Tarrega. Is that true that Tarrega played tremolo with rest stroke right hand method? YOu know i play by my self without nails . Thx with best Regards !

Tarrega, according to the information we have, had ingrown nails, with that problem you have to cut your nails before the groove starts. He decided to play the tremolo with rest strokes to reach out with the flesh in a more fuller way. He did what he thought was the best way for him.

The traditional school for the right hand at that time was a very perpendicular position, besides the physical problem Tarrega had. That right hand can create a very serious problem of tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, because of the friction of the tendons turning the wrist in a permanent unnatural motion.

Excellent your explanation since there are many musicians, "guitarists" or "pianists" affected by this disorder...you are my goodness indeed a very well educated musician, talented guitarist, best classical guitar teacher in NYC and with knowledge in neurology, being able to advise your students or friends!
By the way can't get tired of listening to this piece, the best JOTA in guitar I've ever heard.

Virginia,

Gracias
