I agree this is art ... ( 2 months ago by murphy625)
I agree this is art but I am just making the point that we can still be critical of something without being seen as a heretic!By its nature Jazz is a spontaneous art form and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.

I feel there is a tendancy toward hero worship where we lose our objectivity, John Coltrane unfortuanatly has so many tenor saxophone players of all abilities hanging on to his coat tails copying this style which is seen as'modern' and yet is @50 years old...just think we need to shake things up a bit...

I agree with you. No musician can be on every night. There are times when you are creative and on your game and sometimes your just not into it and tend to fall back on cliches. The best ones are on most of the time however.

Again this clip has been produced by the one and only J. E. Behrendt in Germany at Südwestfunk TV in mid 1960. Possible in USA? Maybe on an private channel - but this was state tv and broadcasted nationwide on prime time. Amazing.
Trane at his best, but Eric did the most for modern music. Don't believe? Think about.

Not sure why there is a "-1" next to my comment. The expletive I used was meant in adoration for Dolphy and in now way derogatory! Coltrane is a god as well! But something about Eric's playing really struck me hard here

Admidst the crime and war in this world, this performance shows that mankind is still capable of great things. Use what you've been endowed for good, not evil. Use it for the benefit of man and not against man.
