Are we witnessing a new political movement in the Middle East? The pressure is now on Hamas to transform itself into a recognised legitimate government.
"It's like a big political Tsunami hitting the whole region", states Palestinian Dr Iyad Saraj. Ten years of failures have left many despondent with the political process. "Jewish settlements are expanding, corruption is getting worse", despairs former Fatah supporter, Omar Shaker. In comparison to Fatah, Hamas is seen as clean and uncorrupt. Despite its involvement in violence, its elevation to a legitimate, elected political party could be the start of a new direction for the region. As Sharon's former security advisor states: "These gentlemen are serious people. We can have common ground."

Not quite that simple , the Israeli government continues settlements in the West Bank and continues to refuse to abide by UN resolutions calling for the return to the 1967 borders among other violations of international law, for example with the separation wall. Of course there needs to be retaliation/punishment by some kind of authority if any violent attack is carried out, but in the case of the collective punishment dealt by the Israeli Gov. the "retaliation" is cover for its real goals.

oh? we were the ones negotiation, not Palestinians. at oslo 95% of the land was offered to form a palestinian state, the proposal was rejected. now if israel wanted to control and annex the west bank and gaza, why would it offer it up for only the promise of peace? that is a fact followed by a question. why would israel withdrawal from gaza if they want to rule it? did none of that happen? are my facts wrong? did the withdrawal from gaza never happen? was it not returned by rocket attacks?
