i think you are wrong.i too think that without waters there whould not be a pink floyd as we know it today but gilmour and wright have contributed a lot to it.For example imagine "echoes" without wright's keyboards...

When they were together Waters was the painter and Gilmour the paint, here we see the painter trying to recreate the paint he used. You can still here Gilmour in the music. Mostly Gilmour, with Roger as Echoes (sic)

I remember seeing an interview with Gilmour where he says that Waters bullied the band into accepting his way ala the songs and lyrics on The Wall but all the music was recorded in the studio in Waters absence and Gilmour laid down the bass line on his own.

I agree, Waters was the brain.
However, part of Floyd's sound is the result of Gilmour's brilliant guitar playing.
I love Waters, but Gilmour should recieve equal credit - Gilmour is the one who created spacey guitar effects (phaser, delay, etc) that gave so many Floyd songs their signature sound.
There is more to music than just the mind of a great lyricist.
Case in point, Bob Dylan - god aweful singer, but a great great songwriter and poet.
Waters + Gilmour = Pink Floyd.

I don't think you're giving Gilmour enough credit - So, you're basically saying, "anyone could have done it"?
Gilmour is one of the most original guitarists to emerge from the 70's.
Comparing his playing to that of Page or Beck or Howe is comparing apples and oranges.
You're simply biased towards Waters.
In your mind, Gilmour is no more than a session guitarist - Maybe you should re-listen to Floyd's albums...Then tell me his melodies and solos did nothing to mold the Floyd's sound.

wayfaerer, my friend, I agree with you that Gilmour is an outstanding guitarist and musician, but what I reafirm is that he played most what Waters have write and compose. The history of PF is mostly the result of the genius of Barrett and Waters and the playing of Gilmour and the others. Peace. P.S. I?ve got the solo albums of both too.

That's so bullshit. Everyone did great composition in PF. COmfortably Numb, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here and so many others are Gilmours original composition. Wright made A great Gig in the Sky and US and Them by himself.ONe of Theese Days is Mason. Echoes and The Atom Heart MOther Suite are creadited as Teamwork composition. True Waters did compose some wonderful songs by himself, like Time, but NOT many. His best contribution to the band was lyrics.

Gilmour did his own thing,and a lot of Pink Floyd original musical ideas came from his mind, and later Waters added lyrics.Gilmour was the painter too in cases
It's so stupid to consider Roger the absolute mastermind.That's what he surely thinks of himself,being the egoistical prick he is (despite all of his geniosity which i profusely admire).But the credits and the story speak for themselves.Its about time to set fire to all those myths around PF. Waters is very important,but he isn't PF

I agree at some points, but i wouldnt say Waters was the brains, they all were really.
Also the sampling, delay, phaser and sliding effects were introduced to the band by Syd Barrett first actually. Not that he was any good at them at all, fuck he sucked, but he did it first.

Post Dark Side, in interviews Gilmour states that they capitulated to Waters artistic agression (or dominance) so RW became the creative driving style with colaborative studio contributions esp. from DG who play most if not all of the RW assumed instruments. Hence the numerous solo ablums at this time. The Final Cut, billed as RW with Pink Flyod, was the end. The PF that emerged is equally dominanted by DG's style but hey, we like him, just listen to his solo efforts. "No Way Out of Here" etc.

I refuse to think of Roger Waters as the sole leader of the band in its golden years (for me 1970-1979). True, in the DSotM "Classic Albums" doccumentary, the members regard Waters as the "pushing, driving force", and true conceptually and lyrically Roger was dominant, but musically he didn't do as much as everyone think. Hes not a great instrumentist or singer and just an average composer. People get to think SOYCD, WYWH,AHMS,Echoes and all DSotM are his. DEAD WRONG

Im see you arguing over who contributed the most to Floyd and I have to tell you I believe Floyd is one of the few bands where one could say every single member pulled their weight and then some.
Thats what made them so great. Every single member contributed amazing material in their own way. They are the closest thing to YES as far as every member pulling their weight I can think of. I dont even believe all of the Stones pulled their own weight.
Floyd, YES and Zeppelin did without a doubt.

Lets face it though regardless of whose contributions Roger Waters sounds a hell of a lot better than the new Pink Floyd with Gilmour attempting to sing Waters parts. Gilmour can't sing Waters stuff, and shouldn't try. Gilmour on the other hand pretty easily replaced by another couple quality musicians, or easily by Jeff Beck... Don't get me wrong I like Gilmours playing, and his style, but he isn't comparable to someone like Jeff Beck.

I you listen to great music, why does it matter who wrote which part of it? If you regard it as poetry than it's Waters' dominance, if you regard it as music it's the Pink Floyd playing.

I think the reason that divided the Floyd was Roger's extremist political view. I like his music, but don't agree with his political ideas.
I love the floyd and I miss Rick.
