My understanding is that the Russians back-burnered their German rocket scientists, limiting their involvement... tapping them as a resource. The US got the prize,Werner Von Braun, and they let him loose on the program. There was no stopping him. Sadly, R H Goddard was reclusive and protective of his knowledge and had none of the skills to run a truly massive program the way Von Braun did. Korolev and Von Braun were cut from the same fabric. They were Titans!

The second one is Gherman Titov, who flew the second Vostok four months later. The Soviets really believed in redundancy; Titov was not just the backup but a true alternate. If Gagarin had a last-minute medical problem or something, Titov would be all suited up and ready to step in, and the flight would go on without delay - and it would be Titov's name everyone would remember, not Gagarin's.

According to N.P. Kamanin, the chief of the Soviet Astronaut Office, Gagarin was a drunkard and a ladies'man. Once, when they were on a vacation in Crimea, Gagarin went to her mistress, a young nurse. When his wife suddenly knocked on the door, he jumped over the window and fell on a cement border with his face, losing his consicence. As a result, his left eyebrow was injured and replaced with an artificial one. This is a real story, described in detail by Kamanin in his diaries.
