President Ronald Reagan, having cancelled his scheduled State of the Union address, asks US networks for time to deliver an address on that morning's explosion during the launch of the space shuttle Challenger, which killed seven astronauts.
The speech is regarded as one of Reagan's finest, and the woman who wrote it went on to become a consultant on the tv show, the West Wing.
