Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata

Today monday 10 November 2008 we mourn the death of Miriam Makeba. Hamba Kahle Mama Africa!
I was fortunate and very privileged to have had a chance to see her in concert in Holland just a few days ago, last wednesday evening in Tilburg and last friday in Amsterdam. She was at her very best and will be greatly missed. As a son of South Africans living in exile during the dark days of apartheid i grew up with her music.
In this clip, which i first posted 2 years ago, Miriam Makeba sings her most famous song Pata Pata during a performance in the VARA TV-studios in Holland, 1979. Joining her on stage towards the end of the song is her granddaughter Zenzi. Zenzi's mother (the late Bongi Makeba) is one of the backing vocalists (in the blue dress).

Mama Afrika, thank you for the undying gift of yourself and your voice. Although your activism cost you so much, you continued to give. Your voice has been so powerful that no government nor record company could silence it. Even in death, when the powers that be held your funeral at an unpopular venue during working hours so that those you championed could not come to you, the world responded. You left us truth and love and we return them to you.

Hi, no Hugh Masekela was not Bongi's father. It was a guy named James "Gooli" Kubayi, whom Miriam Makeba knew when she was 17. (see The Miriam Makeba Story, page 21)
