Even Churchill ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
Even Churchill might dispute that. Recall his statement that he had not become prime minister to preside over the dissolution of his majesty's empire? And that is pretty much what happened. WWII was a pyrrhic victory if ever there was one.
I agree with you ... ( 5 months ago by Pitcairn2)
I agree with you Uhrhausen-what I am trying to say is there is an awful lot of revisionism , particularly by young Germans these days about 'how the Germans won and the allies lost really' Many posters insist that Hitler could have invaded as if it was some sort of alternate history .. but it didnt happen did it. As for the Empire, really 99% of us couldnt care less as almost all of the Empire Builders are Dead!
This is all too ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
This is all too true, Pitcairn2. I was merely trying to point out the ironies of history. I have read many of these alternate history stories, and none of them have as many unexpected twists and turns as the real thing. The important thing is not to replay history, but to avoid repeating it.

Figures don't lie, but . . . Also,I confess to loving the Fatherland. If that makes me a nationalist lunatic, what's your excuse?
I apparently failed ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
I apparently failed to notice that the vaunted British public civility was also a casualty. The billingsgate of fishwives and guttersnipes is a poor replacement.
I'm not a ... ( 5 months ago by maureenOWW)
I'm not a nationalist, in fact I have campaigned against it in my own country. It's fine to love a culture, but to love a nation is insane.
Neither am I. The ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
Neither am I. The Fatherland is a culture, as is your country. I mean this in Aristotle's sense of politea, best translated as a way of doing things. I regret if you mistook my irony for hate. I assure you I am just as critical of the portly bourgeois hypocrites (Spiessbürger) of my own locale. I leave the skinheads to the police, as I am a bit too old for a punch-up. Hopefully, we can concentrate on our positive, complementary traits and avoid repeating the idiocy of the past.
Oh, I see, you're ... ( 5 months ago by ludocrat)
Oh, I see, you're an fan of *aristocratic* fascism. If only I'd known.
But we beat them too in the first chapter of the German hooligan party, in case you'd chosen to 'fail to notice' that for some perverse personal reason. Regardless, your comments speak to a pretty corrupt outlook so this will be the last time I credit them with a response. In fact, I reckon you're a pretty sad fake, as if it matters.
You do get all sorts on Youtube, I do declare. I suppose that's what makes it interesting.
The 'fatherland' ... ( 5 months ago by ludocrat)
The 'fatherland' died with Hitler.
Wake up and live for the new Germany! (And find yourself a girlfriend).
Not pyrrhic at all. ... ( 5 months ago by ludocrat)
Not pyrrhic at all. Principled and painful is what it was. It was a massive, ultimate sacrifice on the part of my forebears, the Imperial British, so that freedom might still have some chance in Europe, in the face of murderous tyranny. It was all the more noble for it.
Germans and French hate to be reminded of the catastrophe they both generated one way or another. So we get all the shit all the time - and from all sides (even from our mates, the Yanks).
Seems unfair. Would you disagree?
Actually, I'm a ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
Actually, I'm a monarchist. You seem to belong to that sort which call everyone with whom they disagree a fascist (or some denigration). Very interesting.
It is unfair that ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
It is unfair that you get all the blame. Iusticia in suo cuique tribuendo cernitur. (Cicero; also motto of Prussia) You should get the stercal material you deserve, not all of it. As for giving freedom a chance: Take out your wallet and count the photo i.d.s. Whence came they, sir? (Hint: Hans Franks' Warsaw Ghetto)
The Fatherland may ... ( 5 months ago by Uhrhausen)
The Fatherland may die, but not yet.(cf. Toynbee, A Study of History, Vol. XII: cultural superpositioning) BAOR is history, and when BFG expires, it will be easy to live for Germany. As for my girlfriend - I dare not type what she just said about the accreditation of your place of employment. My keyboard might melt.
You seem to be a ... ( 5 months ago by ludocrat)
You seem to be a sort of well-educated lunatic nostalgic for some sort of mythical, benevolent, pre-Nazi Ancien Régime. I admit, I comprehend that. But I do not approve.
There is a place in the world for your sort so I'll keep my limited counsel for the sake of your sanity - and mine.
Lol. (Sounds rich!). ( 5 months ago by ludocrat)

There is some truth ... ( 4 months ago by Uhrhausen)
There is some truth in what you say. And I was never alone. Recall Wilhelm II's remark at the start of WWI:"If only Grandmama [Queen Victoria]were still alive, she would never allow this."If we do not first dream of a good world, how shall we achieve it? You may not be a monarchist, but Germany would not be the first country to re-establish a constitutional monarchy(Spain). We can and shall have our Kaiser back. Thank you for your public civility. With that and good will, I see a bright future.
All true. I see you ... ( 4 months ago by ludocrat)
All true. I see you have some history - makes me rather embarrassed about my previous remarks. I hadn't thought about this in terms of 'monarchism'. It must be a British thing (At the risk of sounding weaselly), 'we' fondly regard the monarchy as just 'being there' but we don't really take it very seriously. It's a bit like a favourite, dotty old aunt - only one that's very expensive to keep and to whom we have to bow from time to time.
I'm actually pretty ... ( 4 months ago by ludocrat)
I'm actually pretty comfortable with it and, as a consequence, I accept your argument and recognise that I could be underestimating its virtues in terms of the value system it represents but moreso, the sense of continuity and this firm identity it could provide. I'll think about it. Thanks for your interesting remarks. Forgive me for mine!
British, yes, but ... ( 4 months ago by Uhrhausen)
British, yes, but not exclusively. Shortly brfore WWI, Walter Ratenau, perhaps the most loyal of Wilhelm II's subjects, upbraided some merchants for demanding a republic. When they got it, they went bankrupt(inflation of 1923). When the 'dotty old aunt' wanders off, one realizes how much one loves and needs her.
Of course, my dear ... ( 4 months ago by Uhrhausen)
Of course, my dear sir. May we both live to celebrate the simultaneous reigns of King Charles and Kaiser Georg Friedrich. I have every confidence that we shall not repeat the the mistakes of the past.
You said that ... ( 4 months ago by ludocrat)
You said that before. I still think you're bonkers. Bloody irritating Junker :)
If so, it's a fine ... ( 4 months ago by Uhrhausen)
If so, it's a fine madness. Besides, excessive sanity is a crashing bore. It could be that one of our higher functions is to keep one another alert and intellectually honest. . .
