I haven't heard anything to this effect. I know he's done almost everything from the dramatic baritone fach, so I imagine that's what his voice is like.

The baritone, Stoyan Popov, was born in Jeljaskovo in 1933. He was a student of Christo Brambarov in Sofia. After winning a singing competition in Helsinki he became a leading baritone with the Sofia National Opera.
International appearances took him to Brussels, Paris, Lyon, Munich, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad, Prague and Athens.
