This is the Broken Glass Fallacy. Disasters, wars and whatever merely shift the economy. Sure, it can be good for some folks that produce bullets or whatever, in the short term while the market adjusts. But it lowers the standards of living of everyone: e.g. instead of you working to get some vacations with the family, you work to replace your car.

Just a nitpick, but people don't work for money; money is just a medium of exchange. People work to provide for their families, take vacations, etc. Maybe I'm being dense, but I think this might make it clear that wars, disasters, inflation, taxes, etc only shape the economy to some different end. Also, it's not clear what's best for the economy: is it worse for people to only work 4 hours a day but have no videogames, cheap air-flights, etc? Btw, Phil cut the clip; Peter owned him afterwards...

A popular misconception from WW2 is that war brings prosperity. What happen then was that the progressive movement was growing in the beginning of the century, and governments worldwide adopted socialist measures to cope with the recession, (check Hoovert and especially Roosevelt with the New Deal in the USA), turning it into the Great Depression. In Europe, a few countries adopted Musolini's corporatism (check it out in wikipedia).
