Completely wrong. ... ( 1 year ago by doeman)
Completely wrong. The empirical methodology of science, with its inherent error correcting machinery has proven beyond all others to be the best way we humans have of obtaining knowledge. Just look at the computer you are using and the back at the Bible on the shelf and ask yourself which has provided our species with more.

Recall if you will, ... ( 1 year ago by 50oldschool44)
Recall if you will, what that methodology requires. Observation! Although our ability to observe is much better than it was 50 yrs ago, it is still very limited. Therefore science is very limited as well. We can form theories, but we cannot prove or disprove many of them. At least not yet.
Science therefore ... ( 1 year ago by 50oldschool44)
Science therefore should be seen as a gathering of evidence that is often not conclusive. I'm not saying never conclusive. That would be stupid. Only that we respect the scientific method enough to admit that there may be more evidence available in the future to refute our current thinking.
Limited or not, ... ( 1 year ago by markinu)
Limited or not, it's still better than ' because my holy book says so.' You are using technology which is the product of science. If the science were wrong, why does it have technological applications and provide predictions?
The whole religion ... ( 1 year ago by 50oldschool44)
The whole religion vs science is a false dichotomy. There are very poor interpretations of both and very good interpretations as well. When someone like Tyson compares bad science to bad religion the results are meaningless whether they agree or disagree. It is not science nor religion that is the problem. It is the interpretation of the information, the weight given to the evidence. If something is not conclusive we should simply call it as such.
Most scientific ... ( 1 year ago by 50oldschool44)
Most scientific theories are disproven by more science. What then should we say if the bible also argued against the original theory?
As for practical applications, science has been terrific, no doubt. But then measure the practical applications of the bible!! Nothing has been better for mankind.

He is charismatic and I love watching him. My question is - what is he trying to convey here? That we are part of the Universe? Constructed by the same atoms of star dust? We knew that, no big thing. There are other questions that hunt me. Thank you!

Not just that but ... ( 10 months ago by vitwsm)
Not just that but clearly he's trying to show that if religious people get a sense of ecstasy from worship and from the "awareness" of god, then the feeling he gets from science and a love for exploration is no different. So he says, why not introduce them to this new form of ecstasy that explains the truth of the universe rather than persisting in a delusion.
oldschool you are ... ( 9 months ago by Disneyworld99)
oldschool you are completely changed m thinking on the matter of science. Not completely but a lot. Things we find out now will or will not stand the test of further observation. Some will remain facts while others will have to be changed or thrown out completely. God did not stand the test of time and should be either changed radically or thrown out.

@ Twicebakedtaters: Post-modern philosophy is for intellectual cunts who enjoy wasting their brains on trivial matters. You're just stroking your own intellect for no other reason than to ejaculate bullshit from your mouths (or fingertips, as it were). Go listen to Pink Floyd backwards while imbibing shrooms ya damn hippie.

"trivial matters."
That's cute. If it were trivial you would have ignored it. I give people like you a reason to live. Gives your life meaning. Not much to say, just a lot's O' bitchin.
Now if you actually want to converse, point out what you feel is trivial and or bullshit and why. Perhaps you will succeed in having a point. Railing at me like a child won't get you far. I will simply ignore you.

Yeah, but to get to the heights he's reached you also need a degree in astrophysics. You don't even need a GED to call him an overactor.
