Great to see ... ( 1 year ago by AnnieBirdy)
Great to see someone concentrating on the TRUE factors regarding parenting a cockatoo. 'Cuddle-bugs' is all to often how they are portrayed, no mention of the noise, hormonal mood swings etc. And the power of the bite! False advertising leads to these poor creatures being abandoned far too often!

I have actually ... ( 1 year ago by OverTheRaynbow)
I have actually read about a hard core biker guy during a party "ringing the neck" of one for making to much noise and throwing it on the floor on the corner in front of the mate. The other was taken home by a co-worker and had emotional issues for the next 15 years last I read of him, he sleeps on the human rescuers chest every night top this day. Or it wont sleep at all and not eat. So sad, that its life or death. I agree PEOPLE do your homework prior to getting one of the magnificent birds.

From what I've read, Romeo's bedtime crying is just him saying "Lights out! Everyone okay? Take care tonight!" Parrots always do this at night to make sure the flock is okay, even in a domesticated home.

I would so love to make a video response to this. My cockatoo is so much louder it's a harsh scream and he does it a few times a day not much but enough that I usually end up covering him. He's VERY loud, so loud that when i'm across the street visiting with neighbors I can hear him. He's been doing it all his life.. and he's 7. It's a habit none of them break really =/

Gosh, he's quiet by common standards isnt he! beautiful bird! I am one of the rare people who actually LOVE the sound of the cockatoo call; even though it DOES hurt the ears, and I mean REALLY hurt them. Many people just DONT realise .

Thank you for sharing. If a person has the time and patience these are the most wonderful loving birds. Unfortunately most breeders are in it for the money and not for the love of the birds. SAD.

I have a one year old cockatoo and he came to us at 3months old. We are so lucky so far for the only time he screams is when we put music on and then we sing and dance together. Night Night has never been a problem for us. Total cover and darkness helps.

We need more of these kinds of video. Cockatoos belong with experience avian handlers only. Their delicate lives are often destroyed ignorance of their needs. My Umbrella Cockatoo needs six (6) hours of socialization a day. That's every day, no vacations, no days off, until I die. Then someone else will need to give her the love I share. They live up to 80 years and mate for life.

They also need a lot of exorcise and freedom. they are very curious birds. Romeo isn't the sharpest tool in the shed but he's sneakie and loves to explore so he tiptoes ... and YES I mean tiptoes across the room all the time we catch him. You have to watch them like probably a three year old. But he's such a loving, lovely bird!

P.S. after almost a year and probably 12+ applications we think we may have found the right sponsor for adoption. We will post more soon to come, we hope!

I am glad to hear it. Studies conclude cockatoos have are equal in intelligence to chimps (Canada and Australia on 1440 birds). We did not know that their consciousness is located in a different part than ours(studies in San Diego, CA).
Breeding these wild animals that date back 60 million years to Gondwana in captivity should be outlawed. They have as much right to freedom as we do.
Thank you for the work you do. We need more rescues like you.

Im glad to see this video posted. So many people are ignorant of the true needs of a pet bird and thats why they end up in rescues. Taking on the responsibility of owning one of these creatures is not to be taken lightly!

Hello Father,
They have a documentary on Animal Planet showing parrots are much smarter than chimps. Look for the "The worlds 10 smartest animals". Parrots are number 1! They learn so much faster than chimps it is amazing. But, I do live with several parrots so I know how smart they are and can be a real challenge to live with. But the rewards are priceless.

People dont ... ( 4 months ago by kkrraazzyy00)
People dont understand what is involved in a cockatoo or any large parrot.
They arent a PET at all. They are another child. They have to be a member of the family.
They need to be included in dinner, in play, in social visits outside the home, vacations... anything and everything. I only have birds because I work from home and have a lifetsyle in which I can
fully incorporate an animal as a family member. And they should be nothing less, because they are such social, intelligent animals.
I agree. Our ... ( 4 months ago by luvbrrdz)
I agree. Our Cockatoo did something similar - and ear-piercing peeping, for hours upon hours some days. Distractions would work, but we couldn't stand there and handle her all day long. Lots of the time, as soon as we would step away again, she would start back up. Ignoring the noise (to avoid giving her "positive reinforcement" did not work either. She could honestly do it all day long. Some days we were fortunate, when she would play with the toys provided her, or if we could more time.
Did you find ... ( 3 months ago by DruAlbaToo)
Did you find someone capable of adopting Romeo? Gringa is 13 & would love a partner, but I don't know that we could handle TWO of them. Oh, Romeo is beautiful! He seems well adjusted and loving. (yes, for those who have never owned a cockatoo, the fact that he screeches for only a few minutes before bed is VERY WELL adjusted) I say all this as my Gringa screeches because my husband went upstairs and left her on her rope for a moment. Such a needy bird. She is our baby!
