His playing really fit that free jazz mode.

So sad too - 'Sometimes I cover for Eric cuz he's going someplace.' He meant that Dolphy was leaving the band to stay in Europe, but of course he died there just 2 months later.
One of the greatest solos in Jazz history IMHO. But as you see I'm a Dolphy fan.
