Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of the most highly-anticipated games in recent memory. The original N64 Super Smash Bros. redefined what a fighting game could be by combining fisticuffs, platforming, and fan-service. This formula was refined on the Gamecube with Melee, the game which many consider to be the system's crowning achievement. Brawl continues the series' proud tradition by further polishing the gameplay, making additions where appropriate, and -- most importantly -- giving fans what they want.
The resulting game is pure four-player digital addiction in an impressively sleek package. The game is absolutely brimming with modes and options -- virtually every aspect of the game can be customized to suit an individual player's preference, from the controls to the background music to the match options. The number of playable characters has increased and includes non-Nintendo fighters for the first time. Mario and Sonic may have already clashed at the Beijing Olympics, but now they can really duke it out. And for anyone who's wondered whether Solid Snake could handle Samus, this game is a dream come true. The love of all things Nintendo is what the series is really all about, though, and the game positively drips with little touches and references that will make fans shriek with glee.
The core gameplay remains largely unchanged -- things like air dodging have been tweaked, but not too drastically. A significant addition is the Smash Ball, which allows a character to execute a powerful, often visually stunning, finishing move. The Smash Ball is powerful enough to change the course of a match and adds a new element of strategy to the game.
Brawl is still the most enjoyable as an "old school" multi-player title -- that is, with a group friends sitting in the same room, passing the controller and talking smack. Online play has been included and it's a very welcome addition, but there are some limitations and minor gripes that keep it from becoming the game's main draw. A single/two-player co-op story mode, "Subspace Emissary" is also included. While it's an impressive add-on, serious players will find themselves returning again and again (and again) to the fighting. There are a ton of unlockables, characters to master, and stages to explore.
I haven't even mentioned the graphics and audio, both of which are impressive for the Wii. In fact, there are almost too many aspects of Brawl to cover in a normal review -- the game is stuffed to the gills with content. To really appreciate everything Brawl has to offer, you need to experience it yourself. If you're looking for multi-player fun, Nintendo fan-service, a solid fighter, or simply the next big thing on the Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a must-buy.
