The masons who built York Minster and the other great cathedrals and churches, worked in very dangerous situations (at great heights, with sharp instruments etc). They were highly paid and shared exclusive lodging houses so that they could protect their trade secrets, socialise and ran mutual protection funds for injured colleagues and the families of their dead colleagues. These necessary Christian Guilds (trade unions?) certainly never claimed spiritual secrets and have nothing to do with you

As Masonic scholar Roy Wells suggested, it is likely that the Triple Tau derived from the letters IHS . . . ie. Iesous Hominem Salvitor. This use precedes the formation of the Jesuits, but was also used by them as part of their symbol.
