What is Slam Poetry?
Slam poetry is a form of performance poetry that occurs within a competitive poetry event, called a "slam", at which poets perform their own poems (or, in rare cases, those of others) that are "judged" on a numeric scale by randomly picked members of the audience.
Taylor Mali is considered to be the most successful poetry slam strategist of all time, having led six of his seven national poetry slam teams to the finals stage and winning the championship itself a record four times before anyone had even tied him at three, Mali was one of the original poets to appear on the HBO original series "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry." He was also the "golden-tongued, Armani clad villain" of Paul Devlin's 1997 documentary film "SlamNation," which chronicled the National Poetry Slam Championship of 1996, the year of Mali's first national team championship.

What Teachers Make, or
Objection Overruled, or
If things don't work out, you can always go to law school
By Taylor Mali
www.taylormali.com
He says the problem with teachers is, "What's a kid going to learn
from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
He reminds the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about
teachers:
That those who can, do; those who can't, teach.
I decide to bite my tongue instead of his
and resist the urge to remind the other dinner guests
that it's also true what they say about lawyers.
Because we're eating, after all, and this is polite conversation.
"I mean, you're a teacher, Taylor"
"Be honest. What do you make?"
And I wish he hadn't done that
(asked me to be honest)
because, you see, I have a policy
about honesty and ass-kicking:
which is, if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it.
You want to know what I make?
I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional medal of honor
and I can make an A- feel like a slap in the face.
How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best.
You wanna know what I make?
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence.
No, you can not work in groups.
No, you can not ask a question (so put your hand down)
Why won't I let you go to the bathroom?
Because you're bored and you don't really have to go, do you?
You wanna know what I make?
I make parents tremble in fear when I call home at around dinner time:
"Hi, This is Mr. Mali, I hope I haven't called at a bad time,
I just wanted to talk to you about something your son did today.
he said, "Leave the kid alone. I still cry sometimes, don't you?"
And it was the noblest act of courage I have ever seen.
I make parents see their children for who they are
and who they can be.
You want to know what I make?
I make kids question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write, write, write.
And then I make them read.
I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful
over and over again until they will never misspell
either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math.
And then hide it on their final drafts in English.
I make them realize that if you got this (brains)
then you follow this (heart) and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you give them this (the finger).
Let me break it down for you, so you know what I say is true:
I make a difference! What about you?

This guy is so pompous. I admire teachers, but many make $70k+ for working 9 months out of the year, and never a Saturday, Sunday or Holiday. There are prosecutors in our local District Attorney's office who have worked 25+ years putting hardened criminals in prison who make less than teachers who have 5 years' tenure.
I had many good teachers, but many incompetent ones as well.

i only wish i never worked a saturday.never spent hours after school tutoring those kids who just cant grasp it. agaonising over the ones who are wasting it all. Didn't go in in holidays, didn't mark until the early hours of the morning.Really, I'm glad I do it. It's easy to criticise but until you can stand up in the face of adversity that is today's education system and earn less than 30,000 a year working in Europe's most expensive city, then we should praise him for bringing it to attention.

Just explain the benefits and the pay-scale. That's enough to piss most people off. I actually do the math out for them. So 85% of top three years is my pension, lol it's great. Break-out words like pay ladder, masters degree, or double masters. You might get funny looks but it sure is fun. I go to a high-scale club where most of the members are millionares. If you say the word pension, most of them crawl into the lockers and start screaming.

Many also make $40k (the national average) and constantly are bombarded with work even when not physically present there. With lesson planning, classroom management, and grading, giving teachers the weekend off is the least people can do.

I wonder what most Americans think of school. I scraped my way through school with just the basic grades for university.
In Sixth Form I took it upon myself to dodge homework and read on my own. I had so much ambition. I wanted to read and read and read but they wouldn't let me. I don't blame them. If I saw them in the street I'd just smile and be polite. But they nearly destroyed me. I can never forget how hard it is for some people in school who think outside the box.

I hated school BUT, There was always the odd good teacher who DID make a difference to me and often wonder if I could handle it? A teacher at junior school used to say that I am my own worst enemy. I was like 13 years old and I never worked out what he meant by that, until I got finally understood it age 31!

I actually became a teacher because I only had ONE teacher in my life that spoke with me as one human to another, with respect. I am fair, but I am tough and still managed to be voted BY MY STUDENTS as the best new teacher in business courses that year. Otherwise there are No major pats on the back other than the ones I give myself. Hey, I'm poor, but I didn't say I wasn't vain...
Array ( 2 weeks ago by jcross21)
You're vain & stupid! You only teach business because of what you've learned in classes-the real world is much more cruel. Since when has a teacher been laid off because of lower than expected profits? NEVER! You haven't a clue of what it's really like in the private sector. Shut up & enjoy your gravy train, cuz even in the public sector where $ is endless-it could happen to you.

Seriously? How bout being under funded and under supported? How often have you dealt with people who don't have enough food to eat or a place where they feel safe; and still expect them to be focused during the day?
Have you been a scape goat for anything? Teachers are often treated as scapegoats for parents who don't know how to deal with pressure or say no to their children.
