Jc was a most gifted gentleman. I believe Cimino refused to complete The Deerhunter until the studio allowed Cazale to be in it to the end. When the studio found out that he had terminal bone cancer they wanted to drop him from the picture.

Francis Ford Coppola's commentary for this is excellent, he came more than prepared and has a lot of interesting things to say. He spoke very highly several times of John Cazale ("Cah-Zal") and Harrison Ford, but not too fondly of Gene, who got too into character to the point of being hard to work with. Also says he likes to take his pants off when he is all alone to be comfortable just like Harry, made me laugh.

I often wonder how John Cazale's career would've turned out had he lived longer. Would he still be just a character actor or would he be like Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino.

listen to the walter murch commentary too. You know Murch re assembled the whole thing in a very different manner than what was scripted.
Cazale was just awesome. This and Taxi Driver are my 2 favorite 70's films.

Good point. Some actors are total chameleons, and some are best at playing themselves. Johnny Depp never just plays a normal guy, and michael douglas, pacino, those guys all play with a similar style and they're best at it.
