I'm not using the solid pattern though, I'm just repeating the 3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet etc

You are welcome. Yes it is possible both the solid and the traditional granny. I will work up a tutorial.

I have three tutorials of the traditional granny square. The solid square is solid stitches across the square. The traditional granny is worked in groups of stitches with spaces between each group creating open spaces or holes in the square.

HI, OK I am following the directions ,but my square is not square enough. It's like a round kinda square if you know qhat I mean. Can you tell me what I'm skipping?

Have you looked at the symbol tutorial that I have posted on my crochet blog for this square? It is hard for me to say what is happening without seeing an image of your square. You could be crocheting to tight in some places or missing increases.
