A haunting version of a classic song. I did not know that she had performed this song, but it was a great performance. Not everything has to be like the Animals version -- which I also like. This is an interesting variation.

Yeah well suck this... I don't really care for Joan Biaz or her version of this song however, if this version were strictly an instrumental it would be fantastic. You should be careful throwing that word around.

Funny, Joan Baez's version is the first I heard back in the 60s. When I heard the Animals rendition, I thought they slaughtered it.

Joan's beautiful recording was a huge hit in '59. Nina Simone recorded a wonderful more bluesy version in '61. Dylan credits his incredibly RAW '62 version to Simone & Village folkie Dave Van Ronk. VR, one of Dylan's mentors, had sung the song in clubs in the early '60s & was said to have created an amazing version that young Dylan often listened to as VR reworked it. When Dylan's version was released, VR claimed that Bob had copied his version of the song. Most thought he'd copied Woody's.

I've been watching many variants of this song on youtube and seen people arguing on which is the original singer. Firstly, this is a folk song from 18th century having an unknown composer. Now, the oldest recording of it belongs to Clarence Ashley & Gwen Foster (in 1933) and Ashley sustained that he had learned the song from his grandfather, Enoch Ashely.

Both Burden (according to what Eric told JB) and Nina( according to her authorized biographer and #1 fan, esteemed critic, David Nathan-"The British Ambasador of Soul") heard Baez' version 1st and it's very likely that Dylan(who wanted to "worship her like a religious icon or a saint" before he met her, did too.

The best is Baez' 1960 version (avail on youtube)from her VERY influential debut lp on Vanguard , JOAN BAEZ, which inspired Mr Burden to perform the song. When the story is switched from a whore house ( the original female perspective) to a gambling problem (male version) the song loses much of its pathos obviously. Pete Seeger and Dylan had enough sense to preserve the female 1st person narative.
