I really dont think they were going for pure sex appeal with VII, especially considering the quality of graphics they were dealing with. Were they thinking "lets make these 32-bit polygons totally fuckable? I doubt it. Even with VIII where that became possible, they decided to go for cute with Rinoa which I think they did well. Tifa in AC is even more "beautiful" than "hot" if you look at her style. X-2 was the sex appeal FF.
VII is popular because it was so groundbreaking at the time.

Seiken573 makes a good point. VII was popular because it was groundbreaking. Companies have to make risks, and they did well.
Also, I hate it when people say stuff about Tifa in a sexual way. She is my favorite FFVII character because she is such a touching character and she has one of the most awesome limits :P. People need to stop destroying Tifa with their porno addictions >:(

Sephiroth whined and talked about his mommy most of the game, killing one real character, and FAILING in his master plan..
So tell me how is Sephiroth better than Kefka?

i think there is a whole fanboy issue on FF VII becuase 1. FF VII was the first FF in 3D 2. It was anime styled 3. There was sexual appeal, giant swords, explosions, etc.

JaymeTakineth, the planet was "destroyed" as you put it because Kefka pushed the Warring Triad out of alignment, not because of his own power. All he could do was burn down towns after obtaining their power. Kefka is overrated. But don't get me wrong, Sephiroth is also overrated.

Xorcrupt, most other villians in Final Fantasy History have done what they have done using the powers of other things as well..
Take Yu-Yevon/Sin they only accomplished what they did because of the summoners and the Final Summons after someone said "I won't let them use the final summon anymore" they went down fast enough..'
Ultimecia only ruled for as long as she did because of a machine/magic she was utilizing to stay alive via time travel/body possession..

Sephiroth, he only managed to get as close as he did by utilizing not only Jenova but at some points the main characters to do most of his dirty work..
Kuja, only managed to do what he did by using the "Invincible" plus the power that he DID have was given to him by Garland and he only managed to unlock that power with the help of the main party..
