At the end of the day, we all have to take responsibility for our behaviour, no matter what the cicumstances. End of story.
I wonder if the ...( 4 months ago by budap001)
I wonder if the actions of the guards would have been this bad if the experiment was meant to last longer. I think the reason the guards were so brutal is because they figured - it's only two weeks I'll play my part. It is amazing how far they took it though.
Had the experiment ...( 4 months ago by laxforblood)
Had the experiment not gone this way I bet they would have tried that next, but in experiments you need constants to determine where the source of the outcomes lie. In this case, what was being tested was whether or not characteristics of individuals could overpower characteristics of a situation, not the differences between genders and ethnic groups' approaches to such a situation. That would be too many variables even for this experiment.

Sorry; this comment was in response to those questioning why it was only white males involved in the experiment and not people of other races and genders

i think its very interesting 'john wayne' said he had recently watched cool hand luke and chose that particular character from the film to base his 'role' on, on a number of levels. apart from the fact he was directly influenced by a film in this particular experiment, it's worth noting there are other prison officers in the film, and the whole point about that character is that he's a faceless, mute symbol of authority - so he's very difficult to identify with in any way.

if these ppl were in the experiment as gaurds i don't think it's wrong that they said cruel things to the prisoners, that's the role they're playing. i dont see how 6 days of this was messing them up when ppl are in prisons for years. they needed to keep reality in their heads. maybe they were weak minded. i would participate in the experiment just to see

Watch the movie 'Das Experiment'. It shows exactly what the action of the guards would have been if the experiment lasted longer.

I find it hard to beleive that they all kept a straight face throughout this, and that it was really as serious as they would have hoped.
In these situations ...( 2 months ago by lostangel912)
In these situations if the one's own mind is so influenced by the power of the context then another person's insight is needed. This is why when the female graduate student alerted Zimbardo of the severity of the experiment he admitted that it must stop. Similarly, in hostile situations such as spousal abuse, one must need someone to wake them up and break the cycle.

Cops aren't saints, they are people with jobs. People just like these guards only they don't step out of it into a students life after eight hours. They live it 24hrs a day! Are our authority figures really fit to give unbiased judgment?! Can you really just give them power and leave them unsupervised? You think they are immune to the psychological pit falls the rest of mankind faces?! hummmm
Wow, that one ...( 2 months ago by hiddenmind)
Wow, that one security gaurd confessing to these evil acts seems too boastful. "Young boys are suffering and your responsible for letting it happen." "My God, your right." Hes a professor and he needed enlightenment to see this simple truth? In the name of psychology, we can act as Hitler for scientific data. This is true insanity at its finist.
the professor ...( 2 months ago by GMuneee)
the professor didn't actually act that way because he wanted to or 'in the name of psychology'. he became part of the experiment jus like the guards and the prisoners did. the whole point of the experiment was to see how much situational pressure it takes to override personality and change people's behaviour. and thats what happened to the professor.
I understand that ...( 2 months ago by hiddenmind)
I understand that and that is inclusive to what I said."In the name of psychology," this happened. Does not matter if he "became the experiment." He knew he had responsibility of these kids lives. Do you really think the conscious mind can not feel compassion in an experiment?
Why dont they do an ...( 2 months ago by hiddenmind)
Why dont they do an experiment on why good people dont act out on injustice? They dont even explain or go into detail to understand this, and this is the MAIN CRITICAL question of the entire experiment. Think about it... Do you really think the Professor is that incompetent? Look at him, he and the other student is justifying their actions. "First day FOUR STUDENTS BROKE DOWN." that should be the end of the experiment but they went harder and more evil. Incompetent or ignoring human rights?

the whole reason the prison experiment and the milgram study are shocking is that they show we re all very capable of doing sadistic terrible things. we all like to think we d be the exception to the rule or that the people in those experiments were sadists or weak of mind but its not true.

They should do this instead of big brother, it would be the best tv show ever. For the first few days they would do nothing but they dont do anything on big brother anyway, then i would just get crazy! :D just watched Das Experiment and its amazing they really did this

Its really mind opening on what people can become. A good person can completeley change to being a strict tyranistic person who displays control over a group of people because he has a nightstick. I read about this first cuz my socialogy teacher posted it on her colege website and i tought it was really mean and the professer should have ended it alot sooner than he did. It is really mind opening. Its wierd to think i could be that guard or what if you were one of the prisoners?
What would you do ...( 1 month ago by Blindside453)
What would you do if you entered an experiment and were convinced to think it was actually a prison after thinking it was just something you could easily walk away from? It is really crazy how people (civilians) that have absoluetly no power in the actual world could manipulate and convince people they are in control. Its all about breaking peoples confidence on other inmantes and making them think they are all for themselves.

Do you remember those state tests that are given in high school? To see who will think outside the box? Those are the people that would have stood up to righteousness. That is exactly why the gov. had those tests, and usually it was only 1 out of 35 people that "get it." This just proves that these guards and professor are the type of people that just "dont get it," or are simply, easily manipulatable.
