Women: New Attitudes Toward Getting Older

CROMWELL, CT, May 24, 2007 - A new study conducted by Kelton Research and commissioned by Estroven, the number one selling brand of women's supplements for menopause, finds that 49% of women aged 40-55 say that they feel younger than they actually are, with an average differential of 17 years between their true age and their perceived age. Moreover, this mental manipulation of age correlates directly with bedroom bliss, as one-third of these women have sex more frequently now than in their 20's.
"These results further debunk the myth that menopausal women in their 40's and 50's suffer inordinately from depression and unrest," said Dr. Donnica Moore, MD. "Quite the contrary, many women in their 40's and 50's experience what Margaret Mead termed 'postmenopausal zest.' Women are less inclined to accept the notion that middle age and menopause are tantamount to being 'old,' and that's a very refreshing and instructional attitude."
Although more women are embracing this menopausal stage of life, the survey also revealed many shared medical frustrations. When asked about the "worst part" of dealing with menopause, nearly one-fourth (24%) of women ranked either prescription drugs or expensive doctor visits as their top concern. Overall, "feeling older" and the "embarrassment of hot flashes in public" topped the list. While the Estroven survey reveals that anxieties about menopausal symptoms still persist, many of these apprehensions can be addressed with affordable and accessible over-the-counter treatment options.
For many menopausal women, self-indulgence, such as enjoying a piece of chocolate or a glass of wine remains the most common method of combating irritability. Natural supplements, which are a healthier alternative to impulsive actions, rank just below self-indulgence, as 24% of surveyed women have taken supplements to ease their symptoms.
