Jimi hendrix was a cock...its laughable how people who know fuck all about playing a guitar come out with shit about hendrix, fact is he was sloppy with a minor body of work with average technique. Oh but he was black and used his ass or teeth to play..PMSL.. no true guitar/jazz exponet takes him seriously.
Jimmy Page, Satriani, Clapton, Vai, Richards...all great players.

Yeah, they're great players, although Jimi Hendrix was too due to his great influence on rock music. There are many ways to become a legend :)

Obviously the people you quote as great players don't agree.
Vai on Hendrix: "He had a real unique approach to voice leading and chord textures and chord soloing"
Clapton on Hendrix "He had this enormous gift and a fantastic technique, like that of someone who spent all day playing and practicing, yet he didn't seem that aware of it."
Joe Satriani on Hendrix "Hendrix still managed to be the greatest electric guitar player of the century"
Sloppy he may have been, but that's rock!

Dude Hendrix isnt the best, he is just average in skill but awesome in style. Batio, Gilbert, VanHalen, Malmsteen, and Satriani could out play him any day.

it really depends on what and how they play. Jimi always put soul into his music and broke the average boundries of playing guitar.

If you're talking about speed, then yeah, and you forgot John Petrucci. But speed is only one dimension to what makes a great guitarist, and you make it sound like music is a race, and speed is all that matters. This'd be equivalent to saying all that matters in a greater is how many different colors he uses in a painting. In my opinion all those other guitarists- especially Petrucci- have gobs of speed on their palettes, but they wield it poorly. Art is not a mere contest.

Woops! Type-o: "This'd be equivalent to saying all that matters in a great PAINTER is how many different colors he uses in a painting." Or it'd be like saying all that matters in a great fiction writer is that he has a big vocabulary and uses big words all the time in his books. The longer you play guitar or any other instrument, you begin to see why the FASTEST don't always become the most famous. Many of the artists you mentioned before just don't speak to people the way Hendrix did.
Satriani, Petrucci, ... ( 3 hours ago by lobstergirl3000)
Satriani, Petrucci, Van Halen, they're all very fast, but they're not interesting. They're cliche and uncreative, for the most part, and you could really take any shitty metal guitarist, jazz fusion guitarist and put them on fast-forward and you'd get the same boring result. Jimi Hendrix was creative. Kurt Cobain, too. He wasn't a great guitarist at all, but he was a great, catchy songwriter and lyricist. I've always wondered what he would've sounded like combined with Hendrix's talent.

lobstergirl, i pretty much agree with you. being a guitarist for almost ten years, i've went through phases and the speed phase was definitely one of them. for a long time i thought speed was one of the main determing factors in what is a "great" guitarists, when it is definitely not. speed is great, but it has to be used appropriately.

however, do you have any idea who eddie van halen is?! eddie van halen is one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. period. after hendrix and jeff beck, you find eddie tearing away on his fiddle. greater than clapton, even greater than jimmy page. blackmore, iommi, berry, allman, fripp, and anyone elses name you want to drop too. eddie redefined guitar playing when he came out. he, like hendrix, played their guitar in a way that had never been heard of before and millions of people

immediately threw out all their old records, copied his style in everyway possible, and wished they would someday be like him. Eruption is all that needs to be said. And Satriani and Petrucci are no slouches either. You've obviously never even listened to Satch before because he is one of the tastiest players out there. Surfing with the alien is another milestone in guitar. Petrucci, yes can play too fast and untasteful sometimes but he has an original style that he started
