I did. I saw her live as Norma too. I appreciate the effort but just don't like it one bit. Gruberova's Norma will always be controversial, I suppose.

Well, then you just don't like Gruberova as Norma. A matter of personal taste I say. You probably are used to Callas' Norma: A different kind of voice, of course! But please, don't tell me again that you like Sutherland in this role. I don't think that she made a great Norma. In every opera, but in particular in this, the words must be clearly understood, and more important, the singer must know perfectly what she is singing. That's true for Callas or Gruberova, not for Joan
About Callas. She ... ( 1 month ago by DiegoMartinazzoli)
About Callas. She is not my favourite singer (and not my favourite Norma) because I've never liked some personal liberties she took in "rewriting" the Partitura, according to her abilities. Callas was great in acting, had a particular voice, a perfect diction and she knew perfectly her roles! She was not that good technically, and often forgot words as originally written in Librettos. In my opinion Gruberova remains the best
Callas NEVER " ... ( 1 month ago by Elisabetta611)
Callas NEVER "rewrote" a role's score to suit her voice, she was famous for being a stickler to what the composer wanted and to adhering to the ancient Bel Canto traditions going back to Pasta and Malibran. She sang Norma the way Bellini wrote it for his muse Giuditta Pasta. And she never forgot words in the libretto. Not a good technician? Her Armida defies that statement. She sang Brünnhilde and Elvira (Puritani) in the same week. She was a brilliant technician. Read what Legge said about her
Sutherland had the ... ( 1 month ago by Elisabetta611)
Sutherland had the vocal heft, the brilliant technique and the style for Norma, esp. in her early recordings. Her diction never was her strong point but that's not enough to condemn her. She had more going for her in this role than Gruberova who lacks power, low notes...and those ridiculous "dramatics" moans she adds are a definite no go.

there is "age" in her voice that can be felt by listening only.
but the phrasing is beautiful, I think.
Of course not an ... ( 1 month ago by DiegoMartinazzoli)
Of course not an entire role! Only the most difficult parts. Just one example (but I could do more): Calls - Norma, "Ah Bello A Me Ritorna"(studio rec 1960): the OVERCUT Cabaletta, the difficult with the Gruppetti made Callas to change the tempo (Allegro) into Andante, as usual words indication are not considered and lots of words always replaced with the vowel "a" , staccati turned into portamenti!! Check the spartito yourself. Not a proof from a good techician!

If you are not Italian, you can't understand! It's not good for an Italian person to listen to Sutherland: indeed, only a little bit of Italians really like her. Moreover, In my opinion, her voice was too "Vibrante"
First of all, the ... ( 1 month ago by Elisabetta611)
First of all, the tempo was Serafin's choice, not Callas' choice. Second of all, Callas never vocalized entire words (Zinka Milanov did in AIDA) and Serafin knew the score of NORMA like no other conductor. Better than you too, I might add.
Of course I ... ( 1 month ago by Elisabetta611)
Of course I understand diction problems, one need not be Italian to get that, some of the greatest critics (Kesting, Steane, Porter, Dragadze) weren't/aren't Italian, yet they know opera a thousand times better than you or I. Italy coined the name "La Stupenda" for Sutherland, they adored her. "Vibrante"? Explain that. She never had an excessive vibrato or tremolo.

Critics?!I don't mind critics, at all..I'm not a critic, I'm a singer, I'm a listener! Hope you don't mind them too! I think you are as wise as required to use your ears and your mind! Don't need to use critics' thoughts! Most of opera fans are not critics! Anyway, Sutherland's voice has always sounded too vibrant to me: for that reason words result less understandable and the coloratura is not so clear!(I hope you got the concept, I'm not that good at giving such explanation in English)
I think that is ... ( 1 month ago by DiegoMartinazzoli)
I think that is required a good knowledge of music, but not a great school to read a partitura! Please, I'm not so dunce. In the partitura are written not only notes: Words, articulation, tempo indications.. And so on. Callas always slowed down "coloratura passages"! Not a Serafin's choice. Let's be honest. A conductor adapts the score to the singer's abilities. That's why Sutherland first, then other sopranos (Gruberova for example, but also Anderson) performed the whole Cabaletta.

Gruberova the best? She isnt even fit to be M.Callas student.Saying MCallas is not that good technically is ridicules:(

Why don't you compare the two "Sempre Libera"?? Great technical skills are required.. Then you'll understand who between the two singers is the teacher!

No, I don't! I hear a perfect LEGATO, fraseggio as written in the partitura. This is how Casta Diva has to be sung. Do you have the spartito? Do you know what a "Mordent" is and how it should be approached technically?? There are no portamenti, no jojo! I totally diagree with you. This is an example of a perfect Casta Diva technically. No one ever did better!

Tell me where are these sildes form tone to tone, if you like. I would like to comment them!
If you don't like her voiceprint, I could undertsand, I won't argue about that because It is a matter of personal taste. There are those who likes dramatic voice, and those who doesn't (me, for example). But please, don't tell me that Gruberova lacks of technique and Callas didn't because it is abdundantly untrue! :P

She sounded great in the house when i heard her several years ago with a bell like top of power and clarity in Lucia with Shicoff, 1986 chicago she may scoop up too the top on occasion, so what many great ones did but she sounded terrific live thats all i can say.

REMEMBER SHE IS 61 HERE AND HOW MANY COLORATURA SOPRANOS SOUND LIKE THIS AT 61 OR EVEN 51? She has a great voice for me anyhow.

I´m a big fan of Mme Gruberova and have seen her in most parts since the beginning of her career but I didn´t LIKE her Norma, though it was technically breathtaking. I consider her one of the best singers of her time but will better remember her Zerbinetta or Elvira
comparing gruberova ... ( 1 day ago by operaeater)
comparing gruberova to callas is like comparing apples to oranges, they're both singers, but original and unique in their own way. I am sorry for your amateurish point of view.

same amount of sugar, proteins and water? in one kilogram or in one piece?:D either try to catch the primar point of the sentence or look these information up on wiki!
why shall we keep comapring artists to each other? Art is so dimensionless it is a crime to conduct it in one way.
