Seaside Heights Sun and Fun Promo Tourism Film 1960

Uploaded by: jackbuster
Video Description:
This promotional film from 1960 was discovered by Peter J. Smith, Director of the Seaside Heights Office of Public Relations in May 2008, and was converted to modern video format by Joe
Verderosa of Greenrose Media. Peter had seen this film once before in his life, when it was shown by Mr. Hugh J. Boyd, Principal of his namesake school in Seaside Heights.
Peter spent five years looking for this video inside the Borough Hall. One day, he had to reach high on a shelf to retrieve a box of 8 radios.
However, the box only had 7 radios inside. This made him grab a stepladder and look for the radio. The radio was found on top of a reel of film, which turned out to be the long-lost Sun and Fun video. We like to think that the spirit of J. Stanley Tunney, who appears in this film, and is believed to occassionally make a paranormal visit to the Borough Hall, led us to this valuable piece of history.

I love seeing the old ILLIONS Carousel turning around the 13 minute mark in the film. That brought back great memories when I took my 1st girlfriend Donna on it back in 1983.Too bad it appreciated in value & the owners ended up selling it.The Fiberglass CHANCE one they have in the FUNTOWN Carousel house now is just a shadow of the former 3 that once turned in that building before it.Anyone know where the rounder boards are now ?

I don't see what's so insulting about the term BENNY. It's simply a way of referring to non-locals. Sadly, it was the obnoxious behavior of some BENNYs that caused the area to earn the derogatory nickname "Sleazeside Heights" many years ago. Thankfully, the town has improved & become more "family-friendly" again since that time.

I've been waiting for a picture book celebrating Seaside Heights for years....this film will have to suffice....I absolutely loved it. My family went to Seaside for our 2 week vacation (in July) from 1962 to 1982. I cherish all the memories I have of the beach and boardwalk. Seeing the Global Swing and all those rides brought me right back. As a little boy on that boardwalk, I was fascinated with the lights, the sounds, the smells, and the excitement. So happy this film exists. Bob Molee

Stevie - I remember SSH in the 50's - two weeks in July every summer - bungalow on Grant Ave - Casino Pool in the morning - ham baloney/mayo and white bread sandwich for lunch - beach (pre-badges) all afternoon - "bellywopping" in the surf with rubber rafts - boardwalk at night - the tilt-a whirl - great sausage, onion and pepper sandwiches. Would love to travel back in time for one more summer day "downtheshore".

A "Benny" is either a tourist or a non-resident property owner. The acronym "BENNY" stands for Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and New York, where most of the "Bennies" are from. Strictly a New Jersey slang term, like calling sprinkles on ice cream "Jimmies".
What happened? The ... ( 2 months ago by MrUnidyne)
What happened? The developers, high gas and property prices, video games, lawsuits over every little thing, water pollution... THAT'S what happened!
God, I could climb the walls for a cream soda and a Taylor Ham on a hard roll right now! Or one of those incredibly greasy sausage sandwiches...

I've heard there is some truth in the word "Benny" defining those from Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, NY when it was first used after WWII but there is more to the word than that! The word "benny" and it's perception is used to describe outside visitors who come down to The Shore only to disrespect and insult the locals, the culture, not to mention trashing the Shore towns themselves during their visits or vacations.

I was very glad to have found this old treasure chest of fond memories from this film of "Seaside" from the good ol days. Having then I lived in Philadelphia , it was so special to get out of the city and go down the shore to vacation in Seaside. So special, that in the 1980 I decided to relocate from the city to across the bridge in Toms River NJ. So now, I am No longer a "Benny".... Thanks to whomever posted this film, I know my family will enjoy seeing it. Hank T

Wow. This is the first image I have ever found (and I've looked) of the dark ride I remember as a little kid with the dip in the tracks outside, then coming through the doors at the top, just to turn around and pop back into the dark house. I thought a fire destroyed it but could never confirm.

Yes, thats the one. Dad had to have his pancakes for breakfast & the fish & chips for dinner. They even had a sign hanging that read kwitcherbellyakin(not exactly sure of the spelling)but was a great place to eat.

Haha, I remember that sign! As a kid, we would spend two weeks at Seaside. For my Grandmother, it wasn't complete without Barney's fish and chips. For me, I didn't like fish, but this was battered and fried. I really wanted to like it. But alas, it was still fish.
Thanks for the memory. It was very cool!

I was born in 1958 and I can STILL vividly recall, as a 6 and 7 year old, walking on the Casino Pier with my parents and older sister. The Monster ride (with the roller dip on the outside), the green and white train, the Global Swing, the sky ride, the iron cages that only the strong guys could get over the top, the Dive Bombers, and especially the Himalaya.."Do you wanna go faster?" I thought the guys who operated that ride were the coolest..a crowd of people grooving to the song "Wully Bully".

That video is GREAT, and brings back many fond memories. I started going to Seaside around 1959 as a kid, and from '62-5 spent almost every weekend and every vacation there. Stayed close to Barney's, and must have eaten there 100's of times. It was woned by a real nice guy named Sid, and there was a place up the street called Nick's that served pretty good food as well.
Almost lived at the Beachcomber, and remember Phil Humphrey and the Fendermen very well. Saw them other places as well.
