This is really lovely and fascinating, to see these scenes on their own (and so perfectly put together too). However one interprets it, this movie (and lots of Hindi movies for that matter, Indian culture is not uncomfortable with this) gives lots of scope to the love between two men.
With the introduction of the "gay" jokes (maid thinking the fellows are gay, etc), Karan Johar the director intentionally weaves in this alternate idea I think. Again, so great to see it on its own.

Yes, it's clear (for those who've seen the movie) that most of the material for this video come from outside the "gay joke" scenes. In fact most of the clips with physical contact were not shown in a gay context.
I think that's part of the charm of the video, is that the scenes do not have to be manipulate, just displayed, as you say, on their own. Of course, I'd like to think the song choice also plays a crucial part. ; )
