heh, you must be a Ron Paul supporter. I guess a lot of people think that states should be able to map out their own futures, but I think that individual states sometimes do not have adequate judgment to make their own choices (unless you think that slavery is a good thing, which I assume you don't). This is why, nowadays the federal govt trumps the states, yet justice is generally delivered anyway. Giving states their liberty can, unfortunately, mean allowing it ...

..to take away the liberties of its citizens (ex. blacks). I guess this is a matter of opinion, but I believe that a strong federal government (with all states giving input) will lead to more justice and liberty in the long run than letting all states run their course. But if you prefer to give states their sovereignty, we can just say that slavery was a humanitarian crisis, just like genocide, and we had to intervene to stop it.
PS: arguments on youtube suck; post limitations are killing me
a just war is ... ( 2 weeks ago by HROGAKDTE)
a just war is determined entirely on what cause it was fought for (not casualty number). For the North, the war was fought for preserving the Union and freeing the slaves, which is a just cause IMO. For the South, it was for the "liberty" to own slaves, which is not a just cause.

HR, lol, yeah, I'm a Ron Paul supporter...was a county chairman for his campaign- even though I knew we were going to get slaughtered. Yeah, these post limitations suck. Well, I think at least it is safe to say we have a differing opinion on central/non central government. Was thinking instead of dominating this thread (as we have been, lol) maybe continue in private message-without limit posts- and continue talking on just war theory? Let me know...

yea sure, feel free to private message me, though i won't be able to reply anymore today. and guess why? I've got a project in government class about federal power vs state rights due tomorrow =P
Lincoln gained the ... ( 2 weeks ago by HaveLucidDreamz)
Lincoln gained the support of the union by saying the war was fought for preservation of the union. However in this movie the african americans are fighting for the freedom of their race; the officer the abolishonist cause. Neither of them nessicarily care about perserving the union. Every person who fights a war fights for different reasons, the question of a "just war" is asking "is there something in your life you would fight for?". If everyone agreed on the answer war wouldn't exist.
yeah, you're right ... ( 2 weeks ago by HROGAKDTE)
yeah, you're right about that. boethius wasn't challenging the virtue of the soldiers though, he was challenging the validity of the war itself

wars cannot be valid, they just are. They are extensions of conflicts and conflicts arise from the seperation between the virtues of those that are involved.

The civil war had little to do with slavery. Infact the war had little to do with slavery. Abraham Lincoln did not even appear on the ballot in the southern states.

Ask the men of the 54th Regiment what they believed the war was about. Although it was not completely about slavery, slavery did indeed factor in profoundly as one of the reasons for the sharp division between the northern and southern states.

Thats the horseshit they tell you in the south when you're growing up. I know I grew up there, then I grew up and read a few books... the Civil War had everything to do with slavery.

no it didn't. The north was trying to oppress the south in almost every way imaginable. I bet they did not tell you that the final straw was that Lincoln did not even appear on the ballot in the southern states. Slavery was just a small part of it. There was a bigger picture.

You can arguing about the reasons for the Civil War, who was right or wrong and all that but there is no denying that these men were heroic and this is a great movie.

I'm a staunch Republican, but look at how far our country has come in 200 years. IT'S AMAZING. A black president is hard to swallow for many people, but my gosh look at what our country has accomplished in our short history. Those European faggots have been around for a centuries upon centuries and all they've done is host a few sub-par olypmics.

I live where these brave men fought. And I have studied the civil war. The war was not over slavery in the least. Yet some people get their mis-information and beliefs from others who are just as uneducated as to the history of this war.
If a person wants the real truth, then they need to do their own research like you have.

It's kinda strange...the Republicans were the key anti-slavery party back then that made the difference, and all the rich slave owners in the south were democrats...now everything has flipped...alot of people dont realize the history there

The way I see it, Republicans are still anti-slavery. Think about how many people are dependant on government (welfare, etc) that live in impoverished areas that live in Demodrat districts? Isn't that a form of slavery?
