oh sh*t it's one of the greatest songs ever!!
unfortunately it talks about a world that doesn't exist.. black people say "I'm your brother" only if they have to sell you something! And if you tell them "I'm you brother" they point you a gun and say "I'm not u f*kin brotha gimme dat f+kin chain and tha money muttafukka *@°#§!!!"
and the you go home singing "join the caravan of love...." because your BROTHER stole even your mp3 and you can't even hear the song.. you have to sing it by yourself!!

In my Opinion Housemartins lost much of the feeling in this song when they decided to do it in a capella. Add the fact that they sung it with a nasally voice. The Housemartins have nothing on this song.
Isley's version may appear gay to some in contrast to the styles we see currently. But this misconception can also be applied towards the Housemartins version.

for all the european people who swear the housemartins version is better. i got news for you, IJI version holds more weight over here then your version. for one, there spreading a positive message of peace while the group who sample it fucked the song up. the bottom line is people are gonna to continue to debate which version is better. dont mean to thrown the race card but besides the white people who embrace soul music, there will always be others who will never understand the beauty
