RaananVolesPianist.... Get out of here with what whites did for blacks in the era of the big band. Basie and Ellington didn't need Hammond Hammond needed them. Afro-Americans created this music. I am not saying others didn't contribute but I don't know where you are coming from with your comment. You might be better off just saying you enjoy the festivities instead getting into areas where you have bias and are not informed.

Basie and Ellington did not need John Hammond; Hammond needed them! Norman Granz needed the great Black musicians to put on the shows the musicians did not need Granz.Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman could not touch the Black big bands. As a matter of fact where where did the music originate? Lets keep the record straight. Teddy Wilson and the other Afro-American musicians did not actually play with Goodman. The played among themselves during intermission.

Your facts are a bit off. They weren't "street dancers". Their parents were vaudeville performers and Fayard watched the dancers as a boy and taught his brother. From there they performed on stage and film... not dancing for quarters on streets. They performed at the Cotton Club with Cab. Check out "Lucky Number" and you can see Harold at about 9. By the time this clip was filmed they had 15 years experience. This was considered classy THEN. This is in different league than hip hop.

You got that right. I am just glad my roots are so blurred coming from NO, it is our culture, our heritage, our pride.
Wish they still made them like The Cab, The Count, The Duke.
They are priceless contributions to an American identity.

All these movies were during the war years, people needed something to escape the everyday life, music was the greatest ease, it did not matter who they were as long as it was a happy music. The Nicholas Brothers were the best, all the bands made it possible to ease through the day. Music is the best Medicine no drugs, no booze just music.
