Amasya - Amassia - Pontos - Karadeniz
Uploaded by: pontian69
Video Description:
Magical Amasya. Situated in the depths of Pontus with the river Iri (Yesil Irmak) splitting it down the center and the tombs of Kings carved out in the mountain side.
In the video we climb to the top of the tombs and see the majestic views, we even spotted a stone with a Christian Cross and Greek inscriptions.
Amasya is were my mothers father "Christos Aslanidis" came from. He has told me many storys of seeing the "hangings" when he was young. It is the spot were many trials were "illegally" held and many "unjustly" lost their lives.
It just happened to be the same day as a festival with beautiful "Georgian" dancers and some group form Trabzon.
This was our first stop on our 15 day tour of Pontos with Author George Andreadis.
The Music is Stathis Nicolaidis from the Album "Ada Pazar". I chose this song due to the fact that in Amasya (and other places west of the then war with Russia) a law came out that "Greek" was outlawed and all text (even in church) must be in Turkish so it is understood by all. My Grandfather learn't most of his Greek in Greece, but spoke fluent Turkish. The second song is a live recording from Chrisantho in Australia 1974 From the Sevastopoulo archives.

You have been to Amasya. What do you think about its Ottoman heritage? That is, the majority of the buildings. Did you like them, or maybe not? Especially the houses.
Old Ottoman is nice, modern Turkish seems to be bland especially the attempt to put a flag and statue of Mustafa everywhere you look, kind of like China & USSR.
As I said Amasya is were my Grandfather was from so it meant allot to me.
PS: Why is it so hard to call a statesman by his surename?
What an interesting minset. Wow, must be a very different and difficult experience to live in such a never-ending denial.
