The original title for this song was actually SunUp, but the executives at Warner Bros./Reprise thought that SunRise would sound more natural. Gordy got enraged and rewrote the song as SunDown, which reflected his negative feelings towards the record producers.

I never thought about it, but you're probably right. Everytime you hear such a beautiful song; it usually turns out to be about drugs, satan, anti-American, or anti-family.

Great song. One of many from Gordon Lightfoot. I saw him in concert at the Apollo in Glasgow many years ago and he couldn't remember the words to his songs. The concert was cut short with many dissatisfied customers. But listen to the recordings and you realise there was a great talent there.
