There most certainly was a highly advanced culture predating all known ones. You don't need aliens to explain how this "impossible knowledge" regarding astronomy, physics, engineering. Graham Hancock does a fantastic job of elucidating ancient long-lost civilizations.
However there is overwhelming evidence for UFOs, as well, which dates back thousands of years. Its a big mess. Fitting all the puzzle pieces is up to you. Good luck :/
