Although they've finally gotten close with this one, they always do something like that, and cannot ever add up all the right stuff including but not limited to fast lenses. They'll say of course, that you can compensate with onboard software but why!? Make them right the first time and built loyalty and apreciation from a market base.

To "basslinegenerator":
The DP1 lens is f1.4 i.e. way better than f2.0
The DP1 camera is a jewel of pure genius. I am not afflated with the manufacturer or any sales outlet. I just ordered one from Yodobashi Camera here in Tokyo. They have a back-order list several weeks, and possibly months long even though cameras keep on being delivered to the store in groups every week.
Cheers!

Sorry, I made a mistake saying the DP1 lens is f1.4. Seems like "basslinegenerator" was right; it is indeed f4
I stand by my purchase order and positive comments about this camera anyway, although I wish that lens really would have been f1.4 as I thought it was ;-)

I'm real impressed with you and you're Okefenokee talk. They're all the same and you may spend a lot of money before ever understanding that.

Why is that?
It's about time ... ( 7 months ago by SaganAppreciationSoc)
It's about time that somebody got the idea to leave out the SLR mechanism but have other desirable traits. But it needs to support optical zoom, and other lenses as an option would be nice for some people. Above all i'm glad they give the audience enough credit to realize that an SLR mech doesn't get you anything in a digital system (beside shake, delay, and usually no live-preview).

but you DO know that the sigma has a dslr sized sensor, which is appr 8x bigger than the sensor in the lumix ... dont you ?
because ... it has ... ( 7 months ago by basslinegenerator)
because ... it has no zoom-range, the lense is backfocusing, so there would be no moving parts, the lense itself could be much sturdier, it could be made from aluminium, not plastic to make it light, so the retraction takes lesser power. if its a zoom lens it has to be made in at least two parts anyway, but if its fixed, why not make it out of sturdy one piece aluminium?

OK, if you talk about fixed 28mm, my old Ricoh GR1 is f/2.8 (assuming dSLR sensor you mean something close to 135 format). How come this one is bulkier and is only f/4?
the larger the ... ( 7 months ago by tgrupert)
the larger the sensor the shallower the depth of field. because your GR1 digital has a small sensor it';s effective aperture compared to this camera is actually more smaller.

if this lens was f2.8 or f3.5 it would be much, much larger and the camera woul dno longer compact. The clean ISO's make up for it

what's the use of having a large size sensor if a slow lens means I am restricted in manipulating DOF?

I don't have this camera and don't even intent to buy it, but have you seeing the pictures it makes? Go to flick and take a look...

"poor man's m8". ha. that's very snotty. who calls it that? the dp1 is indeed aimed at a different user/(niche) market to the m8 (hence the more than notable difference in price), but the m8 is a completely different instrument altogether. for instance: try carrying an m8 in to your trouser pocket. why compare the two?

No zoom huh. Would be terible to take it on a safari trip in Africa to take up close shots at lions lol. Thats how I would die. But I love this camera, I dont have it but what do I know im just starting this photography thing gonna go to photography school soon. But it looks cool! I love the classy but yet not to old look of it. I just wished it had a optical zoom.

Not only cause of the sensor. besides its not even 14.6 megapixal its divaided by the 3 primary colors so it only gives off like 4 or something effective megapixels. I just like it cause it looks cool
