Michael Jordan 2002: NBA Record 51 pts at age 38
Uploaded by: hoopsencyclopedia
Video Description:
At age 38 and 315 days, MJ shattered the record for the oldest player to score 50+. The game prior had MJ scoring just 6 due to injury which stopped his NBA-record double-figures scoring streak at 866 games. MJ came out to make up for that here. It should be mentioned that MJ's injury limited him to just 2 full-game scrimmages the entire year in practice. One must wonder, without the injury, what might have been possible at ages 38-40? Zone was allowed starting that year with hand-checking tighter than today as one-legged, twilight MJ broke a few records that day.

When Jordan was in his prime EVERY team had 3-4 marquee players, EVEN THE DOORMATS OF THE CONFERENCES DURING THAT ERA (LAC, CLE, WAS). Furthermore, defenses were MUCH tougher in the 80's & 90's. Zone might not have been legal but you offset that technicality with less ticky tack fouls. You can't even put your hands on a ballhandler backing you down anymore. Scoring is up in the league for a reason and it's NOT player skill.
Let me add this caveat... Jordan had been retired from basketball for the previous THREE YEARS before the season this game was played in.
I see folks on YouTube saying that Jordan "sucked" when he played as a Wizard... Some display of "sucking" when he averaged over 20ppg in the two seasons he was there at age 38-40.
Kobe 81 points? Cool... Let's seem him try and average 20ppg at 38-40 years of age hmm. :)
