Tornado Funnel Cloud over Bridgeview & Burbank, IL 03/27/91
Uploaded by: TBirdSCIL
Video Description:
This is a clip of a video I made back in 1991 of a funnel cloud over the city of Bridgeview, IL on March 27th, 1991. It was videotaped from my parent's house in Burbank near the intersection of 79th and Harlem (IL State Hwy 43). Bridgeview and Burbank both lie on the southwest fringes of Chicago. About 30 minutes before this video was taken, an F-3 tornado did major damage in the suburb of Lemont about 10 miles to the southwest of our house. Miraculously no one was killed. This was the same supercell storm in a weakened state as it approached the city of Chicago and Lake Michigan. If this storm had retained it's strength and this funnel cloud had touched down, it's path would have likely taken it right through downtown Chicago or a heavily populated section of the city including Midway Airport. I was 15 years old at the time this video was taken and the clip includes nerdy weather commentary from yours truly..lol. My segment of the video is a bit shaky because of my excitement and lack of videotaping skills s
o please excuse that. My father and brother both make cameo appearances in the clip. My father took over taping about halfway through the clip when I panicked and headed for the safety of the house...lol The busy street in the foreground is Harlem Ave and the large building underneath the funnel is the Moraine Court Nursing Home. Much of the video was taken from the Wendy's parking lot across the street from the house and alas, the Wendy's is no longer there. This is dangerous and not advisable since we were out in the open and there was lightning in the vicinity. This is by no means an up close and personal look at a violent tornado, its just a look at what happens when a severe storm and funnel cloud approaches a major metro area. I must say the video is pretty dramatic with the tornado sirens going off and traffic going by on Harlem Ave. Hope you enjoy!

wow 1991! Brings back childhood memories. I used to live in the Bridgeport area and I remember this one time the sky turned yellow and there was strong gush of wind. Everything just went flying. I believe there is no siren in bridgeport area. I only go to Bridgeview for DMV haah

Wow, true story....I was in a baseball card shop at either 83rd or 85th and Harlem on that day and saw that same funnel go right over my damm head!!! You were taping only a couple of blocks from me. I also remember the Oak Lawn tornado in 1967 that crossed Harlem around 99th st. and hit the Drive in theatre at 96th and Narragansett, before hitting the Oak Lawn high school at 95th and SW highway. Seems like a Jinxed area 4 sure.

That would be PJ's card shop..:) I wasn't even a glimmer in my mother's eyes when the OL tornado hit but I know all about it. Narragansett is known as Ridgeland Ave south of 87th Street, even back in 1967 I believe. The Drive-In Theatre is now Westfield Chicago Ridge Mall.

Yep I actually saw it yesterday. It was hanging over I-294 vertically instead of coming down towards the ground. It was really weird looking. I was on my way to my girlfriend's but I turned around and went back to my house to get my camera. The pics didn't turn out the great and the funnel had already dissipated by the time I came back outside. Oh well. Pretty exciting though!

I saw it too, I was standing on the corner of 95th and Ridgeland and it was southwest of me. It looked like it was over the expressway. It broke up in 3 minutes.

Hey guy, thanks for the video. I don't remember this storm in the nw suburbs by Streamwood and Elgin, but nether or less, 1991 was a very active year especially by me. We had a ton of severe storms. From spring through fall, I don't think we went a whole week w/o being in a thunderstorm or tornado watch. It was a very good year for stormlovers in the Chicagoland area. If you have more storm videos from that era I'd like to see them.
