and id have to mention that elvis was one of the first to fuse blues influences (big boy crudup) with country (ernest tubbs) and pop (mario lanza).

Bravo, my good fellow. (assuming you are a fellow.) Nontheless, I'd say you are right on point on pretty much every account. I can't find a single thing in your reply that I'd disagree with. Having said that, however, brings me back to the point I was originally trying to make a few weeks ago when we originally met: Rock and roll needed someone who could "mainstream" it. Some one who could make it palatable to a "mainstream" audience.
In other words, ... ( 5 months ago by awwfunkme)
In other words, what Elvis brought above everything else to rock and roll was a white (mainstream) audience. That is what allowed this artform to be "discovered" by mainstream America. So, again...my commentary has less to do with Elvis--and more of a statement on how historically this happens (and continues to happen.) Without a doubt--Elvis brought this preexistent music to the "mainstream"; in the same way the Eric Clapton brought reggae rhythmms to "mainstream Americans.
Taking nothing away ... ( 5 months ago by awwfunkme)
Taking nothing away from Elvis, Benny Goodman, Madonna, New Kids On The Block or anyone else. Again, my issue isn't with the artists--it's with the systemic framework they exist within. Without a doubt--whatever peripheral musical artform that will be the next big thing coming from marginalized populations of people, there is already a place carved out in the culture TODAY that will insure a place for the next Elvis.
but then again ... ( 5 months ago by theZodiacDigital)
but then again elvis wasnt palatable to a mainstream audience until way later, he was considered dangerous by the parents ("the pelvis of elvis too dangerous for the masses"). he was, like i said, an integrator, he was a step for black music to be accepted to white audiences.
not only that but he inspired and influenced many artists after, including but not limited to: james brown, the beatles, buddy holly, isaac hayes, the rolling stones, etc. etc.
your main point to me wasnt that, to me.

I truly enjoy conversing with you. This is (in my opinion) the way internet conversations should be done. (Pay attention, children). Two people who're able to make their individual perspective seen without being rude, disrespectful or resorting to name calling. You are a gentleman/gentleperson and a scholar. I've truly enjoyed being edified by you. Peace.
you called him a ... ( 5 months ago by theZodiacDigital)
you called him a good looking guy with nice hair and a mediocre performer, and part of america's attempt to claim white people invented rap music or basketball (wait, white people did invent that one). people can say elvis invented rock n roll but why blame elvis for other people's mistakes? elvis never made it a secret he looked up to guys like arthur crudup who did it before him. still, one should not deny his talent, and his impact on rock, setting the foundations and perfecting aspects
i think you are ... ( 5 months ago by theZodiacDigital)
i think you are taking away from elvis personally, as a by product youre taking away from his legacy, his talent, and his grand contributions. to me he wasnt "THE" king but he is a grand contributor. there is no "THE" king, but there's james brown, little richard, bo diddley, hendrix, and then yes, elvis, and then yes, many more. i feel like you try to slant him as a byproduct of a racist society. but there's a distinction between elvis and pat boone, and one is talent interpretation and one is
whitewashing, ... ( 5 months ago by theZodiacDigital)
whitewashing, making a music inauthentic, making it less valuable, taking all the danger and all the fun out of it. there's a difference, and it's a very important one.
Allright-what I'm ... ( 5 months ago by awwfunkme)
Allright-what I'm simply saying is this: Elvis, Madonna, Eminem, Joss Stone, JOHNNY LANG, etc, are all beneficiaries of a form of affirmative action that predates the variety we're most familiar with. Granted...THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE ARTIST. I repeat: THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE ARTIST. If these artist were "darker than blue" they more than likely would HAVE NOT have been canonized the way they have been. They'd be just another dark skinned person doing what we've all seen before.
But, as I said ... ( 5 months ago by awwfunkme)
But, as I said earlier, this isn't a new observation. Again, by issue isn't necessarily with the artist...it's with the system that makes this continually possible. And, once again...my commentary has more to do with the sociology and dynamics of race in Am. society than with performers, art or even talent. I enjoy talking with you...but I'm ready to talk about something else, if you are. How 'bout them Cubs?

bullshit, you know ... ( 4 months ago by MUN7001)
bullshit, you know the only reason why Elvis became popular was because he was 'white', Yes he did inspire alot of artists, but that's not to say that he didn't become popular because he was white. He was the start of white America stealing black music . Eric Clapton also is a teaf, he made more money off of black man's music.
Oh, damn! An I was ... ( 4 months ago by awwfunkme)
Oh, damn! An I was tryin' to be nice! I think the closing line of the song makes the point: "I've got a reason to believe...that we all won't be received at Graceland; Nooo, not you, my brotha!!" But, e'nuff said. I've given this subject waaay more attention than it deserves.
The point being ... ( 4 months ago by awwfunkme)
The point being this: Black music didn't need Elvis to be what is was/is. On the contrary, Elvis need black music to become Elvis.

Damn they didnt have the intro:
"Yo Corey Man"
"Yeah man what's up?"
"I saw Elvis the other day!"
"GET OUT A HERE MAN!"

No disrespect to ... ( 3 months ago by awwfunkme)
No disrespect to the Clash intended. People often tend to minimize the contributions of artists who aren't a part of the mainstream's idea of what should be celebrated. Although they've certainly become more celebrated in the last fifteen years, there was a time when they weren't given the proper respect or credit they deserve for injecting a new vitality into the music scene. I was merely trying to say that--sometimes...in the most unlikely places, something remarkably important can happen.
