she never intended to be. shes truthfull to her, thats more than we can say about most bands and singers out there. the fact shes still on the record lable she opened at 18 says alot for how she just wanted to play music and fuck the politics

Is that she doesn't require gimmicks in order to survive (and even thrive) in a business that requires some sort of hook. (Not to say that you couldn't argue that she doesn't.. but I think that it comes across pretty genuine and sincere)

I don't think she writes good lyrics but her instrumental abilities are awesome. i love the guitar rhythm and riff in this song. Same for the "hypnotized" performance on Henry Rollins (found here on youtube). The instrumental is great but lyrically weak.

I've listened to a lot of her music, maybe 20% of her library. I know the uber-political leftist types probably love her lyrics but I don't think they are that good. Let me guess: you're favorite radio show is Democracy NOW! I understand from that particular perspective her lyrics are interesting. To me the lyrics are quirky and the cadence borders on rap or spoken word , which wears on me fast. Just my opinion.

Jeffrey I appreciate your opinion. 80% is a long way to go before you can come up with a full opinion of her. All of her music isn't political. I was touched by her music in 1997 for the first time as it came from the heart. There is something so amazing and powerful about her energy, her passion. Sure the political stuff is cool and daring and truthful. (btw no my favorite radio show isn't democracy NOW)My opinion is that Ani is a musical genuis and I have never seen a better live performance.

I actually really like Ani, and agree her live performances are tops. But I see more potential becasue she is a musical genius. I want better lyrics from her. No doubt she has it in her. But maybe I just need to delve deeper to to find it. No offense to Dem Now listeners.. I listen too.

From Picasso to Godzilla I walk these streets with you. She's no Niel Young or Bob Dylan or even Neko Case. No Steve Earle or Townes Van Zandt. Jeffrey Foucault Jason Molina are also writing great song lyrics. Tom Waits, David Gray, the list goes on. But those ARE the Picassos of musical poetry. Maybe I expect too much from her.
