I would say it's because Good bands back then had proper use of a rhythm guitarist and a Lead guitarist. Playing Lead guitar isn't easy due to it's heavy incorporation with music theory which isn't easy. In fact, it's damn frustrating, but it's what makes for good music. Nowadays however, people are too lazy to learn music theory and so they end up not knowing what they're playing and play the same power chords every time. That just may be why.

i'm not sure if he did, but ive recently read his autobiography, and it mention him going for bass lessons, and his teacher swaying him over to guitar. but i cant remember wether or not he acttualy had that many lessons as its quite colse to the begining of the book. But i reconmend it, its a kick ass book.

Of course he did. It would be impossible for him to play the way he does if he didn't know his music theory. Same goes for all the guitar greats. That includes people who never really had a formal teacher, such as Eddie Van Halen and Alex Lifeson. They may not have learned all one would learn with a formal teacher or formal lessons, but they for sure know their music theory.

yes slash did :) in his book he mentions he went to ( i think college or highschool or summin ) and his only lesson he enjoyed was music theory lol... and also his first lessons he went for were with a flamenco guitar with 1 string and the teacher he had was more a bass player but they (if memory serves me ) listened to a cd and slash said " THAT that is what i wanna do! " meaning the guitar :)
