My Japanese isn't great, but basically at the end Mario faints and Peach asks if he's okay. He says "I just want you to be happy." The old lady at the end does a pose found in older japanese theatre. Means she is surprised or is in a humorous unexpected situation.

I liked it, regardless of the flip ending. I've always just thought of Mario as being Peach's bodyguard and close friend, nothing more. Sure there were always subtle hints, but, they usually were just shows of affection and appreciation for Mario's efforts along with Luigi.
