John was overlooked for years, precisely, for no other reason than being part of a band with such a large teen fanbase (therefore perceived as cheap and disposable by critics) as DD; for the inverse reason no one on earth would deny Jaco Pastorius was a bass god. John had to drift apart from screaming teens to slowly start acquiring the respectable status he's got now -even if a good number of senior teens still scream and swoon at DD.
