Music is a matter of opinion, and believe it or not, Nirvana and Pearl jam are different genres.
Pearl Jam: Grunge
Nirvana: Grunge/Pop
And again, you are entitled to your opinion, but as for mine, I think Pearl jam is better.

they are both grunge
listen to both guitar of the bands and although not identical, they are both heavily distorted and most of their songs carry dark undertones which is 'grunge'. Nirvana and Pearl Jam are both rock as well, the only thing that makes them different is their time and the different sounds they make. Like Rolling Stones and ACDC sound nothing alike, but both are considered rock.

Same way "Pop" is found in AC/DC, its just how the music is played.
And there are ways to tell a grunge band, number 1: When the guitarists plays hard, but the singer sings softer, it gives the feeling of seperation, Kurt always sang ahead, or at the same pce of the guitar.
