because it's an image and not text. You can't copy an image paste it into a text box. This was done so that bots (computer programs) cannot automatically do that in attempt to spam the comments with, oh say, advertisements :P Requirement to type those letters by yourself ensures that you're indeed a human and prevents spam abuse.

If you make it easy to read then software programs will be able to read it, too. You know, we do have programs that recognize test out of images. You're right, it's somewhat annoying, but unfortunately such is the price we have to pay for all the dicks out there spamming.
