Various Sold Secure and Thatcham chains chopped.

Uploaded by: CaptainCropper
Video Description:
Superb film made by www.iq18films.co.uk exposing how utterly dire Sold Secure and Thatcham are at testing chains. We can chop them in under a minute, why can't Sold Secure and Thatcham?
Why not ask them yourself?
Sold Secure: 01327 264687.

There's only so much that 2 or 3 individuals can do, if just 50% of the people who see this video call the offenders and give them a hard time, they might just smell the coffee.

What do you think ... ( 4 months ago by 2007TypeR)
What do you think about the Kryptonite New York Chain with Evolution lock? It cost me £80. I use it to lock my £2000 Cycle (pedal)! I'm scared someone is gonna come and get me. I lock it to a railing that is around 1meter high, so the lock is 1m off the ground so they would need a big bolt cutter i would think.

Hi, a metre would make it tricky but not impossible. If I were you, I'd be looking at buying a 16mm+ D lock and use it properly, i.e. fill the D section with frame, wheel, whatever, so you can't get a fist in the cap. The Evolution IIRC is 13mm, that's croppable even with smaller croppers so it might be time to review your arrangements. Abus 59, and the Kryptonite NY and M18 are all good D locks. You could get an Almax if you're fit enough to carry the additional weight.

Well I bought into this and got an Almax chain.
One thing you need to be aware of is its lack of portability. It is very heavy. Mine is 1m long and weights a lot. The lack of portability is a drawback.
However, it is tough. Seriously. Bigger than any that I've seen.
I own a BMW with panniers and carry this into town, where is gives me a feeling of confidence. I couldn't take it on holiday with the bike though - the weight of holiday stuff plus the chain would be too much.

(cont, from below)
For a home-only chain it's great.
For more portability, I got a Squire MC4. This put up a good fight on Cropper's videos.
I choose between the Almax and MC4 depending on where I'm going and how much other stuff I have.

Im going to buy another squire. I noticed how he started the timer when the croppers where already working on the chain. Its also much cheaper.

If you bought an old MC4 (gold colour) then you got a good deal, they went though a very dodgy phase with the silver coloured chains though, best avoided really.

OK, so I'm sold on an Almax III chain to secure my $1500 bicycle. In practice, does it matter which padlock I get it with, Cisa or Squire? They both look tough to me.

Personally, I'm happy to use either but I kind of like the design of the CISA and the quality is excellent. Given the choice for MY bike....CISA.
I would say that ... ( 3 months ago by jack123ie)
I would say that posting this video just encourages a percentage of potential criminals to try and break these locks - since it appears to be so easy.
Did you not consider this before making/posting this video? Do feel in anyway responsible in this respect or is it more important for you that you post a video on youtube?
Jack, I understand ... ( 3 months ago by CaptainCropper)
Jack, I understand your point of view but if Sold Secure had done their jobs properly in the first place and actually failed these chain, we wouldn't have to make videos like this. The point is that all these chains are 5 minute attack tested by Sold Secure using EXACTLY the same make and model of croppers as we are using. Bolt croppers aren't new technology to thieves so I don't really think we are teaching them anything they do not already know. Call Sold Secure and ask them what's going on.
Yes agreed blot ... ( 3 months ago by jack123ie)
Yes agreed blot cutters aren't anything new. I understand that you want to bring this to the attention of Sold Secure. But I feel this is the incorrect/suboptimal way of achieving that. Yes granted a lot of people probably will contact Sold Secure after watching this clip and maybe that might cause them to improve their standards, but it will no doubt still encourage a small percentage to try. These locks are deterrents, and by posting this video they are not so deterring any more.
Furthermore, after ... ( 3 months ago by jack123ie)
Furthermore, after just rewatching the clip, there's no suggestions on whay locks you should use. It would have been nice to see what actually does stop criminals after showing a wide variety of name-brand locks that clearly do not. Is there a lock that will stand up to 5 min's of attack as shown in the window?
Ok, what would you ... ( 3 months ago by CaptainCropper)
Ok, what would you do? We've been to Trading Standards, they did nothing, we demonstrated personally to ACPO 3 months ago and little has changed on the Sold Secure list despite ACPO meeting with Sold Secure. We've been to the press, they do what they can, but basically no one is in charge of Sold Secure any more, they are out of control and abusing the trust they have garnered with the general public. I'm still not convinced that we are due a crime wave because of this video. Agree to disagree.

Most chains over 16mm with a quality lock will stop croppers. Anything belows 16mm will not (in my experience)

Good video Good demo... If they want it they WILL take no matter what you do .
These locks and chains are deterant only and 80% of thieves are oppatuneists better to slow him/her down by 30 secs before they get to work on the lock

Hello Essex. Going to disagree with you on that I'm afraid. I had an attempted theft on my ZZR1100,broken panels and seat. Now I think it's safe to say that they wanted my bike, howerver,I wanted to keep it MORE than they wanted to take it.If I'm willing to sit at the window with a sniper rifle then I doubt any level of "want" on their behalf would result in a successful theft.Bottom line, make sure your side of the want/keep equation is heavy on your side.

Karamjit, I have had a look at Trimax cables for you and can't actually see any that have an ACTUAL CABLE thickness of 30mm. If you had a cable that was actually 30mm you wouldn't be able to bend it. I am assuming therefore that you have a run of the mill cable and not a specialist custom thickness cable. My advice is to change it for a chain NOW! Cables are terrible, they can be cut with a huge range of tools. There's a cable cutting clip on my page, have a look.
