so sad to see what he had reduced himself to...you can hear the brilliance, diminished, but there...why the fuck didn't the producer talk him into polishing this stuff up and really putting a shine on it? was he that crazy by this point? probably, I guess

I dunno... If you listen to his sister, he wasn't crazy after he got away from London (and the drugs) and went home. I dont think Syd's story is nearly as dramatic as everyone wants to think. Sobering up can be a real eye-opener.

The thing is that ... ( 3 months ago by LYMBO2006)
The thing is that Floyd's original producer refused to do Syd's solo albums, the other one actually gave up Syd and EMI didn't want to provide another one, so the task was left to David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, who were unexperienced and were working in their own records by then.
But the main reason this sounds crappy is because SYD was acting irrationally and wasted too much studio hours. He resulted to be worst in the studio than live after his crisis.

IN fact Syd Barrett did recovered pretty well and lived a normal life after his crisis. He became a gardener, coin collector and painter. He couldn't make a musical career anymore tough.

Ok now I think Syd wasn't the only one on drugs.
That comment is beyond ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to an opinion I suppose (sigh).

Syd's mystic is bolstered more by the fact that the post Barrett Floyd's music, was heavily influenced by himself, Syd Barrett was everything to Pink Floyd, Before and after.

Opel is a little painful to listen to.
It seems so...naked compared to his Floyd work.
Still, such beauty coupled with such depth is a rare sound.

Genious by any standard, this man was way beyond even himself,"How many times if I try, if you may, when I'm in the Milky Way" No-body else in our time on this planet could touch this man, God Bless you Syd Barrett!

To thebreakinghands :
The fact that you try to compare late PF with early PF / solo barrett work kinda makes me think you are a fool.
I love both the early and the late PF.I like what i am in the mood for , some days are just good for psychedelic and some are good for a more dark , sad kind like the wall.
And others are great for perfection , that day shine on you crazy diamond beams true my radio at top volume

I think that if Opel would have been a finished product it would definitively be Syd's best album... all of the demo songs are just awesome! They shine even unpolished... or it could even be that being unpolished suited them well... Barrett's eponym album is the more produced one and is the one I like the less...

I think syds music sounds best underproduced. Syd in his purest form, it's a masterpiece.

I agree completely!
Both Madcap and Barrett had great songs but Opel had Birdy hop, Opel, Dollyrocker, Milky Way, Silas Lang and of course, the Superior version of Clowns and Jugglers.
Its my favourite too!

It's too bad drugs and mental illness were the end of such an amazing talent. Syd was, and still is, one of the most under appreciated artists of our time. He deserves far more recognition. RIP Syd! (And Rick Wright too.)
