Get A Job !

Uploaded by: MrBongers
Video Description:
Out-of-print and hard to find , but deserves a wider viewing, Brad Caslor's 1985 film "Get A Job" follows the tribulations of a cartoon character, Bob Dog, as he hunts for a job. Technically, it's an "educational film" dealing with self-motivation, preparing a résumé, contacting people by phone and mail, getting ready for an interview and the interview itself. More than that it's a brilliant homage to Bob Clampett and other cartoony animation of the 1940's.

Wow! One of the best post golden era cartoons I've seen. I love the sound design too. Only thing that bugs me is that the characters all have ugly designs. Shoulda copied Clampett a little more faithfully. Canadians seem to get everything right except that.

Well, I don't agree that the characters are "ugly" ... purposely grotesque , funny-looking, goofy , yes , but not ugly (IMO). Also , as far as "copying Clampett" I think that the film is certainly inspired by and an homage to certain aspects of Clampett's work, but I'm glad that Brad didn't "copy" Clampett. You can definitely see the influences , but Brad brings his own spin on it .

(and, tacos4all, I have no idea what being Canadian has to do with it... your generalization about "Canadians seem to get everything right except that" is a little broad , don't you think? )

well i mean in terms of every canadian cartoon i've ever seen. I'm basically saying that as far as i've seen most modern Canadian cartoons (1980-present) generally make fun cartoons that are more similar in spirit to golden-era cartoons (AKA "right", lol) than their American counterparts. However i just don't find the character designs to be as appealing. Grotesqueness certainly has it's place, but it just feels depressing compared to Clampett's designs.

For a long time, many American animators embraced a Japanese sort of cuteness that comes from smoothing all rough edges. This happened over time to Micky Mouse, Bugs Bunny, even the Simpsons, but it is unnatural in a first draft. Unfortunately, almost every Hanna-Barbara cartoon starts out that way from day one, and it has become a sort of American standard.

'Wrong.. Japanese style comes from classic american animation. in other words Japanese animation is a copy of early american animatin.
