Maybe this is true. ... ( 1 month ago by Shargaad)
Maybe this is true. But, as an Italian, I knew far more americans who just go to bars and clubs, looking for trendy and sexy Italians and lots of wine, than americans really interested in culture.
And many of them, when they are in front of masterpieces just say "oooohhhh soooooo cuuuteee" "sooooo beautifuuuuuul" and they're ready for the next pub crawl.
By the way what you say about hystorians is interesting.

It's hard to appreciate a masterpiece without a open mind's eye that transcends nationhood/patriotism -- what meaning is a painting of the Ottoman siege of Vienna to an American if they have absolutely no investment in the incident? I think the same would be for Europeans: what value would Gettysburg or Saratoga or Micky Mantle have to a European? The answer is NO meaning until one is able to transcend pety distinctions between artificial lines on a map. I think 'Rome' offers a great deal in...
showing us this ... ( 1 month ago by JustShoveJayOhBe)
showing us this concept. In the scene following this, Cicero orates a letter to Brutus and Cassius that starts "TO THE HEROES OF THE REPUBLIC..." and in an early episode, Pompey and the senate decide that the best way to save Rome from Ceasar is to abandon the city of Rome! Everyone involved in the Roman civil wars in this show is so wound up in controlling the "idea" of Rome and the city of Rome itself isn't even relavent in the matter! After all, all the wealth of the country was in the east
So what's the have ... ( 1 month ago by JustShoveJayOhBe)
So what's the have to do with American tourists? Well, I believe in the end it is all a learning process that must be handled with baby steps. The exterior of the tourist may be like "this is sooo cute!" etc., but what you must keep in mind is that a world of emotion, thought, and completely unique contemplation beyond our comprehension goes on in every human mind, and that exterior expressions never represent truth. All language and all re-presentation is violence against the original thought.

How on Earth (from reading many many accounts of Ancient times and not just this series) did Mark Antony managed to get pawned by this "child". My God....it should have been no more difficult to get rid of Octavian than ringing a half starved chickens neck. Antony was too busy womanising and drinking to see the threat grow. Pathetic.

Truly the thought process of a Roman politician.
Octavian proved ... ( 4 weeks ago by mystolenusername)
Octavian proved himself extremely able. He reused all of Caesar's successful policies and lerned from Caesar's mistakes. He gave the people what they wanted: entertainment and food for the plebs and position (even without the power) and prestige to the eqites and senators. As I recall he doubled the amount of Consuls and quadrupled (I think) the amount of Praetors. He was very, very smart indeed, certainly a worthy opponent for Mark Antony.

I dont doubt he was ... ( 4 weeks ago by aeonflux67)
I dont doubt he was clever. But at the time in the Rome series when Antony has him by the neck = he was only a boy. Antony was too stupid to finish him off. In real life accounts Antony had Octavian beaten well before Actium but signed a peace pact and married his sister (one of the peace pacts sweeteners by Octavian). The battle at some place starting with B in or near Italy thus never happened but Octavian was not in the better position. Hence Antony = pawned by his own stupidity.

Actually Antony had great faith in others' honor because he valued his own honor, which in a way was a great character strength but at the same time one of Antony's greatest weaknesses.
